O&O ShutUp10-free antispy tool for Win 10

I've been thinking of using O&O ShutUp10, well, ever since I've been using Win10 but until today I hadn't. What surprised me was there are three "Telemetry" settings but the same information is displayed for all three. The same goes for "Advertising Info" (1 & 2) and Cortana "Input Personalization disabled" (1 through 4). There are others as well.

Regarding Telemetry, I had already set Windows to send only Basic information, and I don't mind that so that Microsoft can see what crashes and why, then maybe fix it, but in O&O ShutUp10 the settings were red showing they were in their default condition. As @itman posted elsewhere it looks like Windows settings changes aren't registered in O&O ShutUp10 unless the settings are made with the program.

I don't think that this is entirely true. I've made some changes on my system (disabled diagtrack service) and it noticed that next time I run application and asked me if I want to keep a change or revert it. Change was not made through an application but through services.msc.
I agree though that I couldn't find what exactly some options in program do on my system.

PS:
The info for version 1.4.1388 is not completely clear to me.
I don't know what is meant by "Problems with some systems when creating System Restore Points" in version 1.4.1388.
Do they mean that it is fixed? Or do they mean that there is an existing problem?
Anyways, I gave the info as it appeared on their site.

 

FWIW ~ on my W10 Home. Shutup10 calls create system restore point but, the restore point does not populate to list.

We have seen that sometimes a restore point isn't always created. But unfortunately we haven't been able to find the culprit, it seems that the problem is related to Windows. Our results have been so far:

The problem seems to be related with

a) faulty created system restore points or
b) older system restore points which have been created before the update to Redstone 1.
On a "fresh" Windows 10 without Redstone 1 we have been able to create with O&O ShutUp 10 system restore points successfully. It was successful even after the update to Redstone 1.
On a "old" testing system where no system restore points could have been created it was possible after deleting them and disabling system restore and enabling it again to create system restore points.

It says there about "Problems with some systems when creating System Restore Points" :
"Probleme bei Erstellung von Wiederherstellungspunkten bei einigen Systemen beseitigt".
Alas, my German isn't that good. I guess we need someone with better knowledge of German than me. Sorry!!

 

they write they (probably) have fixed that issue with the latest build.

I wonder if it's possible that windows gets unstable or apps crash unexpected when using O&O ShutUp?!

 

yes. depend what you disabled.

 

I've not had any problems using O&O Shutup10, but I only use the recommended, safe settings. The program offers detailed help.

 

I used it in Windows AU with almost all the options used, and I had no problem, except with my network printer that stopped working, but it was my mistake to have disabled an option on device sharing.

From Windows CU I did not see any more need to use it. I simply changed the options in Windows itself and also put the telemetry in the Basic level.

If it is possible to make things simpler, let it. The more programs and settings you change, the greater the chance things will not work properly.

 

The recommended (green) settings only is safe?

What isn't clear is where there are multiple settings e.g. Telemetry disabled (1, 2 or 3 of 3), what is actually being changed by each one? The tooltip should be more explanatory.

 

To be more accurate the program has three preset levels, ie "recommended", "somewhat recommended", and "not recommended". When you click on each item you see a more detailed explanation of what changing the setting will do. I use the recommended settings to eliminate telemetry and unnecessary sharing. The other settings are not necessarily unsafe; you just have to understand the impacts. As to what is actually being changed when settings are enabled/disabled I assume items in the registry, but I haven't checked it out. Hope that helps.

 

Can you guys who also use O&O ShutUp10 do me a favor and test something? I'm trying to check if this issue is global or only affecting me.

Now, if i turn "Telemetry disabled (2 of 3)" to green and restart as asked by the program when i go to check for updates in the settings it takes a huuuuuuge time to complete.

That entry belongs to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\DiagTrack in regedit. Red = 2; Green = 4

If you could set it to green, apply, restart and check for updates after to see if you can confirm what i've just said i'd be appreciated.

 

I used O&O ShutUP10 to turn off all telemetry and the system completes Windows Updates checks in just a few minutes.

 

Few minutes, like what? Because that's the point in my case, if i turn that option on it takes about 3 minutes to complete a check. While with it disabled it takes 5-10 seconds, like it normally should do everytime.

 

In that case I'm not sure. I've kept telemetry disabled from the beginning with Windows 10 so I don't know how long an update check takes with it enabled. 3 minutes doesn't seem that long to me ( just saying )

 

3 minutes is indeed way too long and not normal behavior.

 

You are correct yeL. That option is now disabled (red). Wondered why checking for updates took so long I put it down to Microsoft lol, so thanks. 4 minutes down to seconds.
