I use Acronis True image for incremental backups at shutdown I want to enable bitlocker with TPM. Will bitlocker interfere with incremental backups during shutdown?
Interesting. This is different from IFW. IFW lets you backup the Bitlocked OS partition without suspending protection. The image is the same size as an image of a non Bitlocked OS partition. It's not an all sector image. The image can be restored offline and the OS boots to a Bitlocked OS partition. Further encryption isn't needed.
I've never tried that but I'm surprised it works. Even Macrium Reflect requires additional code on their Recovery Media (WinPE) to successfully do that type of operation, and I think Acronis' Recovery Media is Linux-based. What type of Terabyte offline restore are you referring to, Brian... WinPE, IFL, etc.?
I think it´s possible to backup a BitLocker-encrypted disk from Windows, in the usual way, because the disk in unlocked. Also, it´s possible to backup from a WinPE, but the disk must be unlocked first. This can be done from the command prompt interface, which is available in all WinPEs. I suppose that in Macrium, these commands are included in the Macrium program. Not sure about restores.
What I am not sure of is at what point does bitlocker lock the drive during shutdown or does it? When Acronis does incremental backups at shutdown it is after everything else is shut down including the UI if it remains unlocked during shutdown then incremental backups should be unhindered.
TRF, To create the backup image in Windows you must set IFW to do a VSS image, not a PHYLock image. Only sectors in use will be imaged. To restore, I've only used TBWinRE. IFL can't do it. In TBWinRE you run a manage-bde script to unlock the OS volume. Something like... manage-bde -unlock C: -recoverypassword 098032-033550-457622-063591-281171-518969-471988-435237 manage-bde isn't available in Linux. Linux has dislocker but I couldn't get it to work. After the volume is unlocked you do a normal restore into the partition. After the restart you will be asked for the BitLocker password and Windows will load. BitLocker will be ON. If you want to create an image in TBWinRE you unlock the OS volume as above and use the "Read from Volume" Option in IFW. So unlock and then create the image. If you later restore this image, after the restart you will be asked for the BitLocker password and Windows will load. BitLocker will be ON. If you don't use "Read from Volume" to create the image you will get a failed restore and Windows won't load.
Thanks, Brian... very clear. Since manage-bde is a Windows-based script, I guess I don't understand why Acronis can't do this in their own WinPE-based Recovery Media.
FYI: I setup the system over the weekend, I am happy to report Bitlocker does not interfere with Acronis incremental backups during the shutdown process.
I was hoping I could use Acronis True Image 2018 with BitLocker after upgrading to Windows 10. However, I had so much trouble with tests I performed in Windows 7 that I gave up and am using Image for Windows instead. In case my experience is of interest, here is the summary I sent to Acronis. The agent had offered to try to solve my problems (which I had not yet detailed) or just give me a refund, which I had requested. Dear Mr. ------, I would like to have a refund. I will tell you the problems I had with Acronis, in case you are interested. However, I do not wish help to resolve them. I have already started using Image for Windows, which worked the first time. I was using Casper Secure Drive Backup for many years, but in the past several months I had serious problems using it on two different computers. I waited as long as a week for a response from their support. In the meantime, one computer could not be used at all. I simply do not have any more time to spend trying to get backup programs to work. That is why I am declining your offer to try to resolve the problems I had, which were the following: FAILURE TO MAKE RESCUE CD. At the beginning of the process Acronis said the size of data for the rescue CD was about 720 MB (I do not recall the exact number). It appeared to be creating the CD, but after about a half hour, it said it could not create the CD and that the CD needed to hold about 620 MB. I did not attempt the process again. FAILURE TO CREATE RESCUE USB FLASH DRIVE ON FIRST ATTEMPT. This may be because I first checked the file system of the USB drive to be sure it was FAT32, and I left open the Properties window in Windows Explorer while creating the rescue media. After the error message, I formatted the drive, ran CHKDSK (no errors found), and successfully created the rescue media. FAILURE FOR ACRONIS IN RECOVERY ENVIRONMENT TO RECOGNIZE MY EXTERNAL USB DRIVE ON FIRST RESTORE ATTEMPT. I backed up the entire internal drive of my laptop with Acronis, and I had Acronis validate the backup when it was created . I also backed up my internal drive with Symantec System Recovery 2013, in case Acronis failed. I ran Acronis from the external USB drive. It could not find my external drive, a G-Technology G-Drive which I bought new only a few months ago. I restarted the recovery environment, and this time Acronis found the drive. FAILURE TO RESTORE BACKUP. I set up a restore operation for Acronis to restore the BU of the entire internal drive of my laptop from the image on the G-Drive. A few times I "went back" a screen to confirm my selections. A few times I saw different screens from what I had seen before. I selected the option to validate before restoring and proceeded with the restore. It was very late, so I left the operation running overnight. About 7 hours later, the screen appeared unchanged. It said there was 52 minutes remaining. Five minutes later it still said there was 52 minutes remaining. I gave up. The above operations were on a Dell E6440 laptop running Window 7 SP1. Since I found another program that worked the first time, I will continue to use Image for Windows. Please send me a refund. Thanks for making this so easy. Regards, I do give them credit for making it easy to get a refund, which a requested about a week after my purchase.
