How is BD Free on low RAM pc's? is it light?

 

How low are you talking about? All of bitdefender's processes are consuming only around 100MB in total on my 32bit as well as 64bit windows 10 pro PCs. This is for the latest stable bf free 16.

No slowdowns anywhere on any PC whether it be my gaming rig or a low powered laptop or my other 7 year old desktop (all win 10 pro).

Between 65-75mb here, most of the time. Having 4gb RAM.

 

I should mention that I ran a full scan last night, and near the end of the scan, the GUI window suddenly disappeared and the whole program crashed, services and everything. Nothing unusual or special in my file system, so I think there must still be some bugs present. I restored an image of 7 with the old version on it. I am hoping we can still use the old version as long as we like without a forced upgrade. At least for now anyway....

 

Of additional note:

Ransomware Protection in the paid products is file overwrite prohibition by unknown processes in default user folders (libraries) and those optionally defined by the user.

Tests have shown it's "better than nothing."

As in the paid versions, Free's front line ransomware protection will be as for virus and malware - BD Core, B-HAVE, ATC, URL filtering and Nimbus cloud services.

I recommend to family and folks I know who can't afford the expense of paid products to run Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit Free and make them aware of its supported applications.

BDAV Free and MBAE Free (and Windows Firewall) IMHO their best user-friendly hope.

I also believe Defender's Limited Periodic Scanning in Windows 10 AU has value. Yep, that's faith based. But ya never know...

 

Thanks for the info. I'm definitely weighing my options for other AVs over Webroot (despite not having any issues), and BD has traditionally caused me slowdowns and instability in the past. Just deciding between Avira/Avast/BD and maybe Kaspersky, Eset and AVG.

Cost isn't much of an issue. Free is nice, but Newegg sales and eBay keep the costs more than reasonable. Hell, a 2 year, 3 PC license to BD is only about $10 on eBay. That's just nothing.

I'd love to be able to use it on my computer though. Never understood what made BD completely perfect for half of its users, and completely unstable and slow for the other half. No other AV program has such a divided experience among the userbase. And while my computer is 3 or 4 years old, it was high end when new, and still perfectly in line with high end PCs these days.

I hadn't used BD paid for a couple of years (Lavasoft Pro instead) and I started using the previous BD Free on my two systems.

I then used the BDIS 2016 6-month free license and then found a 3-PC/1-YR license for $19.95 and just recently another for $15.99.

That takes me out to April 2018 with the recent free upgrade BDIS 2017 and no doubt BDIS 2108 when that shows up.

At this rate I'll never actually use BD Free. (I run it on a test system that I power up every week or so; more often when I hear about some update/grade activity. I like to compare BD paid vs free processes, libs and drivers.)

The again, for some one I know $7 is gasoline for 90-100 miles of commuting in her economy car, nearly a month's worth. She and others I know manage their budgets to the penny.

 

Right. And you've been using it for a while. Great. You also can't deny the reputation BD has of being completely unusable to a lot of people. Which is the experience I've personally had, every time I try it out.

 

It possible to whitelist stuff in the free version?
I BD detects a file as malware is there any way to recover it?

 

The cheap keys I keep finding ill be all set for the rest of my days , I'd like to try BDF but all my Pc's have paid on them, I have a family member that needs AV so ill probably put BDF on that one.

 

Nope not denying it, just stating my experience.

 

Preventive exclusion is not possible,
but restore and exclusion is, after BD-free-2016 quarantined a file.

Tried it myself, it works.

BD-free-2016 is not the right stuff for wilders members, but the best free AV, for average users.
No nags, no advertisement, absolutely quite.

Combine it with Unchecky and HMP.A (paid) and you have a layered security, that hardly can be beat, when using Chrome with uBlock Origin.
BD-free-2016 also runs well together with ZAM and KAR, all at the same time,
but that's overkill.

 

Better than Avira on which you can't exclude a file. I think I will try it

Yes, a recovered file is excluded, without further action.
To recover a file, open settings/quarantine and restore the file.

I installed it on Windows 10 as I don't want anything but a file scanner, I don't need any HTTP scanning that may slow down my internet but was wondering, how effective is the free version compared to the paid version when it comes to fle detection?

 

Did you search the site? there's plenty of info on both paid and FREE.
