MS really made Win7 to look bad because of updating problems and trying to force people to w10. After the published fix: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3200747
my computer is back as a responsive as it ever was. So some of you boasting how fine ur w10 is might have forgotten how fine W7 also was before the MS made the update problems and high cpu associated with it.

Never have had any BSOD in W7 unlike some one above posted. Eventually when this laptop dies, it is already 5 years old, I too will also have to get a w10 laptop.

FWIW Win 8.1 with Classic Shell (the original OS) on my primary laptop was indeed a very good combo for me. No issues. Preferred it to Win 7, seemed snappier, dunno about the security aspect. Like @Peter2150 I don't really rely on Windows security.
Have moved on to 10 now (on 4 laptops, the others were all Win 7), but have had several issues, especially with AU. e.g. Amongst other strange problems, I appear to have a driver issue (computer won't shutdown/restart) - which don't exist on 1511 version - but can't track down the solution.
In retrospect I would have stayed on the 8.1 OS on my primary laptop. I do have an 8.1 image but it is too much effort now to get all my apps up to date again.
The move to 10 on my Win 7 laptops has also not been without issues, but generally has been an improvement because they do feel snappier, and the built-in security has been improved.
Most people probably haven't had upgrade issues with 10, but I am not a fan of these periodic large upgrades (with unpredictable outcomes). On the other hand, they have taken away much WU control on 7 and 8.1 now also.

I don't want to sound rude, but I have noticed that Windows 8.1 is also faster at times then Windows 10, I reinstalled Windows 10 and after a while I have problems with my VPN Software that I can't connect on Windows 10 (Build 1511 and AU) all of sudden it worked well when Windows 10 first came out, according to the event viewer it may be something about my network adapter, as it could not even repair my connection on build 1511 and it told me that the internet connection works but when I went into seamonkey nothing worked at all. I have switched back to Windows 8.1 (Core) for the time being as I feel more at home with it.

Sorry OO shut-up have an half placebo effect, you can't completly disable telemetry on W10, the most basic setting is to it set to collect security only, telemetry is a part of code source of W10, the only way is to use a third party firewall like WFC, but it's a pain, Microsoft's IP are changing often (testing my self). And i also noticed that certain gpedit.msc settings are revert back to default due some Windows Update.

The thing is hat using O&O is more about telemetric features i don't need/use than being afraid of my privacy being compromised.

This is the whole point - you don't use telemetry events, Microsoft does.

Edit: I should probably say that I have made the move to Windows 10 and am rather happy with it. The security changes alone are worth the switch.

I have moved the 'Diagnostic and usage data' setting to 'Basic' and feel comfortable having made this change.

MS does it since ages so nothing really changed; before they did it silently now they do it openly.

    @The Seeker

Couldn't agree anymore, plus they don't have the right to do this, but it seems most of users don' care of that, for sure W10 is nicely than W7, but this is the "Entourloop".

guest, i have not this problem on WIndows 7, when setting correctly (lol, my settings), nothing go out and no parameters revert back to default (eg gpedit.msc), so i repect all opinion but i've tested this in real time.

i was more focused on what is going out, some processes like svchost.exe must connect to internet to do some stuff like updates; now unless you can read what datas it sends ; there is now way to block data collections.

i blocked all outbound connections on WinFW except the ones i need but if MS want collect datas, they will; it is why i stopped worrying about it...i prefer encrypt my datas instead than block the leaking.

They do. It's their OS and they can do what they like with it.

I'm not saying that telemetry is good (or bad). But, like it or not, that's the reality.

Yes cause of accepting EULA before installing or if you'd bought a pre-installed computer, LOL Eula is auto-accepted.

from my view running windows 8.1 as main os, then windows 7, then 10pro and 10ltsb.
i had ltsb from scratch and pro as upgrade. at least no problems with the upgrade but my win8 is also not messed up and i had a backup in hands.

for some reasons i dont like win10 - and it has nothing to do with the eula nor telemetrie or updates mechanism. its forcing apps for every little crap and its updates (patch day) became russian roulette. in fact my ltsb is still 10240 (instead current th2) and my pro is th2 instead redstone1 (RS1). RS1 is causing so much trouble and MS is forcing user into this silly insider program to get there out with the latest fixes. but the insider at least is also unstable.

those privacy tools like OO shutup are not placebo but they cant disable all otherwise windows wont work proper - and some only should screw with a backup. some prefer w10privacy - should have more options, cant verify http://www.winprivacy.de/english-home/

forced updates are ok, its the responsibility for 99.99 per cent of the people and updates are still important. anyway some can set to manual check or for a tasked restart. information about is all, not to goof it.

glad for pro or ltsb i am able to work a little more as "admin" (real admin mode, gpo) but i had to do same for win8 but this disables UAC so apps never will work here. also i dont have a ms account, no need to share or recover data from any cloud.

for now i can have updates for win7 up to 2020 and for win8 up to 2013. even skylake users can be happy again.
    http://www.zdnet.com/article/micros...port-for-windows-7-8-1-skylake-based-devices/

but - some machines need win10 to run proper - in some cases there are no drivers for older windows.

the major discussion about win10 was in times for the free upgrade. meanwhile the daily grind is back again and people have more time to think about. if some are happy with vista (EOL in April'17 !!) or win7 or win8.1 (win8 got dead in jan'16) - stay with it - "never change a running system". otherwise make a backup and ask a lot before upgrading - lots of nifties in special for security software.

When LTSB became available, I made the move.

Microsoft has no grounds for complaint, now that I'm running their latest OS.

I figured out that since I could finally get the Windows 10 edition I wanted, no real reason to stay on Windows 7 Pro.

I installed Windows 10 on one of my five computers.

I now regret not doing it with all of them but I had no luck installing Windows 10 over Windows 7 so I had to wipe the drive to install 10 successfully and regret all the work involved. At my age (83) why bother?

I had no choice but to make the move. I had Win8.1 Pro on my old laptop, but my new one has the Kaby Lake CPU and GTX 1070 so I had no choice. Couple that with a vendor who doesnt make drivers for anything less than Win10 on this laptop I really have no choice.

I gave up on Windows 10 for the same reasons I gave up on Mac OS X, not enough end user control. Add to that frequent "upgrades" that are a complete reinstall of the OS that remove many of the guerilla tweaks and workarounds I come up with, and enough is enough. I want an OS that quietly works for me in the background, not one I'm constantly doing battle with.

That's exactly the OS I have. Quiet, dependable and just lets me get to the business at hand. New features are cool - if they're compelling. I saw nothing in Creators' Edition Pro that made me want to upgrade. I enjoy a classical operating system and I don't necessarily need whatever new features appear in Windows. When Microsoft delivers compelling content, I might move over to the Current Branch. For now, I stay put.

Cortana is quite useful, but my English accent is not so good so it doesn't recognize the orders right away when i talk to it , seems my "hey cortana" isn't proper but the rest are recognized:p
