    Hi All.

I have replaced my OS drive with a brand new HD drive and had been using Win 7 on the old HD.

But Since I am going to format and install a new OS on the new drive, I was wondering if I should make the move to Win10 Anniversary Update 1607, or stick with Win7 or 8.1.

How many of you have made the move to 10 ? Should I or should I not ?

    Thanks !

    pratzert,

Install Win7 first and then do a free upgrade to Win10.

I did (installed AE using, gasp, Windows Upgrade Assistant!) and would never go back to 8.1 even if it were possible now. I don't even have an ISO, but you really should have one. Day(s) go by without one error in Event Viewer. It's clean, efficient, and good to look at once you've configured it to your liking. There are bona fide telemetry issues which you can adjust to some extent, and there are at least two threads on the subject.

By the way, I read about your ordeal with your previous hard drive. I am very glad you are up and running once again.

Grab Win 10 without hesitation. It is the best Win OS ever. Forget everything what was there before Win 10. I never ever would go back to any of previous versions.

I also think Win 10 is a great OS. I don't want to contradict Brian, but upgrading from Win 8.1 to Win 10 never worked for me. Is Win 10 still free as an upgrade?

Used Win10 since day one, tweaked it to fit my taste, work 100 times better than Win7/8/8.1, i will never go back.

I've also used Windows 10 from the start and am very happy with. I have it installed on several computers.

I did, when it first came out I had some issues the first couple months, but has worked flawlessly since then, I've tweaked it a bit and really have no complaints now.

It is like every OS, once you know how to use and tweak it , the only complains you may have left are the drivers issues for some very specific hardwares, which isn't entirely the OS fault.

Or, you know, that its a privacy nightmare and you have to trust Microsoft :p

No no, we dont need to have a 3 page long exchange again like last time :D

On topic, I upgraded to Windows 10 during the upgrade cycle; I did it to get the extra 5 years of security updates. I dont use it for anything except updating or esoteric software (Forscan for my vehicle), mainly because I just cant trust it.

Yeah :p some can live with it, others like me tweak the OS as much they can, and some others just can't :D

Variety, is what makes life worth it.

I didn't upgrade to Win 10 - mainly because of much lesser control that MS is giving it to user over OS - but do test it in VM.
@pratzert you can install 7 or 8, take an image and then upgrade to 10. Then if you don't like it you can restore previous system.

Control over updates, control over features and settings (so they don't get reset after updates or upgrades), also don't want to reinstall OS twice a year... All this is probably possible by some "hacking" but I would never be certain that all changes I make will stick over longer period of time.
Win 10 Ent (LTSB) is the closest to what I want from OS, but I can't get it (at least legitimate way).

yep, if you had Win7 Ent/Ultimate , you can't get the same control with Win10 Home (obviously). We all want Win10 Home to be like Ent , but you know, business is business...

As we have previously established, I am firmly a member of the last group :D

Variety is only possible within the confines of what a master allows you to experience, unless you live in a system of liberty; while Windows certainly isn't authoritative yet in terms of its experience, it has taken alarming steps in that direction. Then seeing uncertain levels of collusion between tech companies and USG... yeah, not easy to trust for me.

Just so I dont give the wrong impression, I used Linux full-time long before Windows became a privacy nightmare- I prefer the penguin for a lot of reasons, so invariably I am biased.

Yes, for me even Win 10 Pro isn't what I'm looking for.

P.S.: Windows 7 Ultimate got upgrade to Windows 10 Pro, not Home.

I upgraded all my systems just to take advantage of the offer and then reverted them all back to Win7.
    Why?
    - I do not like the forced updates. If microsoft let me choose a day of the week or the month where the update would happen I could live with it, but as it is now I'll pass...
    - Combined with the automatic updates. I can't stand their constant adding/removing/modifying features of the OS. Every update is like a "surprise" it could be good or bad but I hate surprises that are impossible to revert afterwords.
    - Windows 10 after 2 years still seems an eternal beta (= unfinished product). Features get added and removed constantly and annoying bugs do not get fixed.
e.g. With no english versions if you select as primary language a whatever non english and as a secondary language US english the main/admin account can type both in his language and in english by changing the keyboard. But every other account can type only on the non english language because the keyboard does not switch in english. The workaround for the other account is to use as a secondary language another english setting as UK english.
    - Windows 10 have problems identifying the storage of android devices (sometimes they appear but most of the times they don't). And I am not willing to constantly plug/unplug my devices to see if they get identified.

I could continue all day with annoying bugs and inconsistencies...
I need an OS that works each and every-time and not one that I'm constantly trying to guess "what happened now?".

That's admittedly a big drawback to Windows 10 Sneaky telemetry to boot. Speaking about boot, 7-second boot times? Immediate desktop after sign-in? Great performance but there's a price tag underneath, it's true.

What gets me is Microsoft's blah about their pricey gadgets running Windows 10 the "best"--oh sorry, Windows 10 bricked your lowly machine? Should buy a $$$$ Surface, shouldn't you? Yeah.

    :) Which version/flavor of win10?
In 2 years there have been 4 windows 10 versions and none of them have the exact same feature set with it's predecessor....In 10 years one would have to compare 20 versions of win10 with 1 version of win7.(in all those years of pre win10 OSes microsoft not even once removed a feature from the initial release, they added features but never removed one).
