    Hi :)

My System Restore is no longer working. When I open System Protection the window does not show my drives and just says searching.

The error code is (0X81000203). My Volume Shadow Copy IS running and set to Automatic.

This occurred after trying a trial of KIS 2017, which I promptly removed as it was not alowing me to view some websites. A certificate issue I assume, despite the fact that the websites included The Washington Post among other reputable sites. I have had the same problem before with KIS disabling System Restore.

The usuall fix for error code (0X81000203) is to make certain that the Volume Shadow Copy Service is running. Mine is so I am stumped.

    Any suggestions?

    hawki,

Are you able to restore an image taken prior to installing the trial of KIS 2017?

Do you run Acronis? If you don't have Acronis then nevermind. If you do...

This happened to me on 2 machines and I was able to narrow it down to Acronis 2016. I had to restore an image prior to the corruption of the Volume Shadow Copy Service and then uninstalled Acronis and haven't had a problem since. If you do have Acronis this is the only working option I could find. I spent several days trying to fix it otherwise and could not. Unfortunately I thought Kaspersky was the culprit for me too at first, but it was not. Good luck.

I use this to enable SR. Run CMD as admin and copy/paste:

    reg delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore" /v "DisableSR" /f
    reg delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore" /v "DisableConfig" /f
    reg add "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SPP\Clients" /v " {09F7EDC5-294E-4180-AF6A-FB0E6A0E9513}" /t REG_MULTI_SZ /d "1" /f
    schtasks /Change /TN "Microsoft\Windows\SystemRestore\SR" /Enable
    vssadmin Resize ShadowStorage /For=C: /On=C: /Maxsize=5GB
    sc config wbengine start= demand
    sc config swprv start= demand
    sc config vds start= demand
    sc config VSS start= demand

Maybe it would not hurt to remove all shadow copies, just to make sure:

    vssadmin delete shadows /for=c: /all /quiet

    Thanks TairikuO :)

Didn't work for me. Think my problem is deeper than that fix. Got some unsucccessful results like: "key is missing"; "there is a problem with VSS Provider."

At the KIS Forum they gave me this to try - there are at least 17 others who reported the same problem. Many others may have it lurking too, but they won't get it until they uninstal KIS.

"Need to start the PC in Safe mode and create a reg-file with the following content:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{71a27cdd-812a-11d0-bec7-08002be2092f}]

    "UpperFilters"=hex(7):76,00,6f,00,6c,00,73,00,6e,00,61,00,70,00,00,00,00,00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{71a27cdd-812a-11d0-bec7-08002be2092f}]

    "UpperFilters"=hex(7):76,00,6f,00,6c,00,73,00,6e,00,61,00,70,00,00,00,00,00

Then launch the file as Admin, then reboot the PC in Normal mode, check the issue."

Have not tried this one yet.

    Thanks Victek :)

Tried it :) Didn't do the trick :-(

I only tried "Repair VSS" - maybe should try more, but didn't see any other Repair choices that seemed applicable. I did check all my System Files also.

Regardless of what caused it if it was broken like mine I don't think it can be fixed without restoring an image or reinstalling Windows. In any case I think it is incompatibilities with the Anniversary update because it stated for me shortly after that. I am greatly concerned that whenever we have updates like this it will bring problems for 3rd party software. As inconvenient as it may sometimes seem to make a backup image, it's better to have it and not need it...

    Hi xxJackxx :)

Nope I disagree. I have had the same exact issue with a few prior year's versions of KIS 20XX. I had used Kaspersky nearly continuously for nearly two decades, until 2015, ever since it was rarely known in the US consumer market when it was only being sold online by one small sales agent that only sold Kaspersky products. Forgot the name - might have been Command -- and it's website color motiff was red, white and black.

I went for nearly two years without System Restore cuz of Kaspersky on a reliable Vista OS that gave me no need for SR. Not feeling that confident in Win 10 AU yet.

Will be imaging my system this week :)

Think that would be a lot quicker than a reset/refresh.

Wondering if going back to Win 10 and then re-upgrading to Win 1067 again would work. Would save the time of reinstalling drivers and programs.

I do have everything on my PC backed up on two seperate external HDDs that I keep disconnected from my box. (Redundant cuz I have had the experience of an Iomega external HDD going bad after 7 months - lost a ton of stuff.)

My next step would be what Robin A. suggested. Install Win10 1607 over the top of your current OS. You won't lose apps or drivers. Do this in Windows and use Win10 1607 on a UFD.

Thank You Robin A and Brian K for your advice :)

It turns out that uninstalling KIS 2017 did a lot more damage to my system than I first realized.

This happened with KIS 2016 also, which slowed my system down to a crawl. Uninstalling it totally borked my system and had to use a USB recovery drive to get it to boot. Dunno what is peculiar about my system that causes this with KIS post 2015.

Thanks for the info. I have always consider Kaspersky to be the top notch (the best in the world actually), I guess I was wrong, though it confirms my other guess, that less is better, free AVs are better, less bloatware. There is no reason to run 2-3 realtime engines (internet shield, etc) with the same signatures.

Well KIS 2017 provides excellent protection, unless you are one of the unlucky ones whose system does not agree with KIS. I follow the KIS Forums. The thing about KIS is that it is capable of causing critical problems on a user's PC. When KIS causes problems they can be major problems that can disable critical components of a system. Perhaps because it drives so deeply into a system. Though the KIS Forum is loaded with such instances, they represent a tiny percentage of KIS users.

I hope you aren't basing that solely on this. I have had every AV I have ever tested trash a Windows installation at some time or other. Make a clean image of your machine, test, and when you find one you like that likes your machine back, then you are set.

Actually I do. I use Avast Free on my mom's computer with Minimal protection and everything possible disabled. It runs like a charm. Avira free can envy.

Thank You All for your help :)

The Win 10 Upgrade In Place with Win Media Creation Tool worked like a charm - took several hours but was mostly all automatic so I was able to start it before going to sleep.

hawki also now finally has an image of his system - better late than never - another lesson learned the hawki way = The Hard Way

Never let it be said that hawki did not do it his way, no matter how ill-advised and painful :)

I had the exact same 0X81000203 error with system restore after uninstalling Kaspersky. The above solution worked after nothing else did. Thanks!
