That's probably not a good idea if you want to use new features like Cybercapture

What modules are needed apart from File Shield to get Cybercapture working? I have only File and web shield installed, and I wonder if cybercapture is working on my laptop.

Thanks in advance for your answer.

I don't have Avast installed so I can't look for the settings myself. But it appears it requires to enable CyberCapture, community checkbox and web shield "(webshield to spot the download and mark it as being downloaded from a specific url)".

looks really nice but imo i would only even bother with it if they removed all the unneeded garbage, it turned into an everything and the kitchen sink av if you ask me and i used to love avast.

    Hi zfactor,

Thanks for your note... Please help me understand, what exactly do you characterize as "unneeded garbage" in Avast?
And are you familiar with the Custom Install option that lets you totally fine-tune the modules the get installed?

    Thanks
    Vlk

basically anything other than the things needed for the av and or firewall. the web toolbar remover, search engine tools, system speedup junk, drivers updater, registry cleaners, defrag tools etc etc etc the list goes on, avg was also like this. and yes a few years back when you guys started adding the extra junk i did custom install but then i would either be suggested by the gui to add the missing stuff (same with avg) or a pop up for it, or at times i had avast do a major update then after a reboot it took it upon itself to add stuff i chose not to install. i mentioned it many times, even asked on the avast forum back then and never had a resolution. just to use the installer to remove what i didnt want, please just release a plain version with just the av, MAIN shields and an option for the firewall and i may just start using it again. like a " gaming version " or super light version etc. i dont want to have to mess with it at all.

i just did a search for avast bloat and i know for sure im not the only one who says this, to pay for an av then to have to disable half of it. no thanks. to add i used to sell avast to some clients, i no longer have a single client who uses it whether it be at my recc or because (and i have a small number who did this) called me to remove it and put something else on there

Any other users get massive buffer bloat on dslreports.com/speedtest when using Avast?

Edit: I have a 1gb Docsis3.1 connection. Not sure if that make a difference.

Well, I'm still not sure I understand. I mean, for example take Eset (I suppose that's your product of choice, given your Avatar). Looking at their website, the product gives you the following (besides the malware protection / core security features):
    - Antispam
    - Banking and payment protection
    - Parental control
    - Webcam protection
    - Home network protection
    - Anti-theft
    - Password manager
    - File encryption

It feels to me that the list is quite similar to what you're calling "extra junk" in case of Avast above, but somehow, the stuff is in your product of choice as well (and quite honestly, is a pretty standard set of features these days, see also Norton, Kaspersky etc.). So, I'm confused whether the thing that irritates you is the mere existence of these extra features, their actual quality/implementation, the business model and the way the product is sold etc...

The fact is, some of our users have problems with the freemium business model ("free-to-play" with in-app purchases of premium features), and I can see that: the product can be a bit noisy at times, and I understand there are people who may not be comfortable with that. But I'm not quite sure I understand when you say that you're annoyed by the mere fact that these features exist.

I know that you had been a long-time Avast user, and I'd really like to win you back. Just give us a hint how and we will try. :)

    Thanks
    Vlk

I also don't like the bundled "extras". On the other hand, I suspect if Avast said "Ok, screw it, we will just stop offering a freemium version", that a lot of the free users would be screaming "Give it back!". Some people just expect too much for free, without understanding the needs of the business.

vlk, i use a stripped eset version. so i do not have the password manager, parental control, anti theft etc etc etc. and even using smart security version i can turn OFF those and then set it to NOT NOTIFY me about them in the advanced settings menu, so then the gui appears as if nothing is missing nor does it say add this or try this or have an add for a registry cleaner or a updater etc. and then when it updates it does not try to add them back again. so my point is if you want to offer the extras fine do so but give users a way to fully eliminate those from the program / gui and then do NOT notify them to install them later. dont just have the gui say they are turned off or not installed, and for sure dont ask me to install them later. once i tell a program no, i want it to be permanent. and just so you know i am ONLY talking about a paid version of avast. if the version is free then by all means include whatever you like, thats why its free those users should imo have to deal with whatever is included due to the fact it is free i have never or will i ever use free versions of any av because i want to support the company. but for paid users who dont want to EVER be annoyed by things again give them that option. this is also the reason i no longer now use avira. they decided to add the launcher then connect etc etc no thank you.

clocks i am NOT at all speaking off any free programs. see my response above and you can see i am only reff to paid or "pro" versions etc. when a program is free one MUST expect extras nowadays that is how many companies make money when people do not want to pay for programs.

Any news about the future of cybercapture or the merge with AVG?
    Any big change coming soon?

I'm about to purchase an AV and I'm still undecided between Avira, Avast and Bitdefender
