That's new in the 2016 BETA version. Been using the 2014 release version, that does not have exclusions...

Even with the exclusions, you still need to let your files go into the tank first, before you can exclude them. So depending on what gets hit with a false positive, you could still brick your PC. Or at the very least, wonder what happened to your files.

This is what folks are complaining about with Avira, because this send files to quarantine first behavior, then exclude them, is NOT interactive.

Interactive means a pop-up dialog at detection that asks you what to do first ...

wow what the heck are you thinking avira...... a customer of mine was reinstalling avira and down loaded the avira "installer" and after it downloaded and installed avira they also got stuck with the system speedup and the avira vpn etc etc. and when i removed the system speedup avira no longer would open because of missing files. as every stupid move avira makes i get closer to no longer using it for anything ever again. not cool to take it upon itself to installl all this extra junk this is exactly why i stopped using so many other programs.

I hate bloat too. That is the main reason I abandoned Norton, Comodo, and Avast. But the last time that I ran the Avira installer, it was a simple matter of unselecting the addons like speedup. Easy. Read the dialogs. Then once installed, go to programs and features, to run the change module to add/remove Avira program options. I go there to remove the options that I do not need.

I am troubled by the trend of the software vendors seeming to know better than we do what we need, in an attempt to cross-sell or up-sell, in a misguided marketing attempt to maximize profits. But Avira is not one of the bad guys...yet.

this installer had no options to uncheck simply an install button. nothing more so you got whatever it decided to install.

Which installer did the customer chose (file name)? If you chose to install Avira Antivirus Free (avira_en_av...) there is no way that anything else then Antivirus is installed per standard, the installation of additional tools need the user consent. If you chose to install the Avira Free Security Suite (avira_en_fass...) you will get the software bundle as intended.

I tried to reproduce the described situation about speedup and missing files but could not reproduce it. No error message appeared and the other tools worked fine. So something unknown went wrong on the affected computer that would need further analyze.

    Well, you're right.
It's still much easier to do exclusions with BD than Avira. At least I had difficulties with Avira, it didn't respect my choices.
It's been some time since I used BD 2014 but if I remember correct I could exclude anything I wanted.
I wonder if Avira ever brings interactivity back? Until then I'll be using something else.

I do agree that interactive is the best choice for most people at Wilders who somewhat know what they are doing, but the average user isn't interested in making decisions as to what may or may not be malware. Actually the majority of users expect the AV of their choice to know what is good or bad, and from this angle here at Wilders we are less than a minority. I'm not surprised Avira's decisions are governed by the majority of users who by and large don't want any interaction with the AV.

I still wonder why it is so difficult to have two different modes to please everybody like in the past. Personally I'd like to reiterate that ever since this change was implemented I had nothing quarantined automatically. When I last tested Avira with the Eicar virus test, the examples used with the standard protocol http were all detected in interactive mode, but the ones using the secure SSL enabled protocol https were all quarantined automatically...

Thank you for your feedback, zfactor. This page is delivering the "avira_en_av" setup file and I had checked the user flow for this installer - it does not force the installation of other tools. Please let me know in case this happens again or is reproducible.

actually I think it is humorous about the launcher. I put Avira Pro back on all computers along with System Speedup. Avira is still the lightest product I have used. Oh as far as the "launcher" being a issue, come on folks, I have opened it one time in two weeks. And that is suppose to be a pain compared to not having it. Please

BTW I agree with you, I understand that for someone special can be annoying, the vast majority doesn't care at all and at the end is not really that annoying

This is the launcher of Avira free, mine is slightly different, may be because it is the Pro version. You cannot uninstall it.

The Avira Launcher is now called Connect.
I have seen it today on a paid Avira-pro. Exactly the same.

Today a costumer brought in a machine, infected with a browser hijacker.
All options from Connect where installed and enabled.
    Chrome was hijacked though...

...because the user wanted so. ;)

As the mantra's screenshot indicates and as the Cmhelper said: it does not force the installation of other tools.

Then my launcher must be an old version, I would expect Avira to update it automatically although for me it is not a significant issue.

So...the anti-ransomware capabilities of Avira 2017 0, ransomware 1. Nothing catches everything but I had high hopes... a multi-layered security is still the best bet then. No AV-software should be trusted on its own. As always.

I agree. When a third party computer is infected there are several variables which cannot always be verified and therefore be conclusive. The AV fails because of [0 day] malware is a possibility, the user disabling the AV intentionally (they often do it for games) is another. Checking that all modules are on and updates are the latest should also be done on a regular base. Options from the launcher won't increase detection, but the most important factor for security is to have at least another layer that plays well with Avira. In my case Sandboxie and sometimes Shadow Defender are my real umbrellas against undetected malware.
