Does this Avira 2017 version have anything new protection-wise? Edit: nevermind, besides still having the launcher, they loaded it with other mandatory bloat/crap. I think Avira is dead to me.
Any difference besides whats already mentioned in the thread between the free and paid version when it comes to the 2017 edition. I notice some anti-ransomware capabilities on the Pro website?

How do you update the Avira Launcher? Mine is still stuck on version 1.2.70.16079. Do you have to do it manually or should the Launcher update automatically?
In my case, the Avira Launcher (now Avira Connect) never upgraded automatically. So, I always upgrade the Launcher manually. Go to Avira Download Center http://www.avira.com/en/downloads download the latest version and install the Launcher on top of the working one. After the Launcher upgrade, I always experienced the following bug: The paid Avira Pro reverts to Avira Free! So, I have to re-install my paid hbedv key and the Avira Free reverts back to Avira Pro (my settings in Avira Pro remain intact). ---------------------------- For paid versions: Further to your 25-digit activation code, it's a good idea to save a copy of the license file HBEDV.KEY on your hard disk, for example in My Documents. You can find the HBEDV.KEY in Program Files > Avira folder. Loading a license: http://www.avira.com/en/support-for-home-knowledgebase-detail/kbid/1080

A bit unfair to go back to 2012 for an issue with AVIRA. Within this timeframe almost all major AVs had an issue of this kind. LoL
Each to his own. It's not my intention to be one more YouTester. There are professionals for the job and I trust them..... https://www.av-comparatives.org/ https://www.av-comparatives.org/ https://www.mrg-effitas.com/ https://www.av-test.org/en/
they use in the wild samples, not realy fresh, zeroday ones that are hard to detect. well avira does not have a single good proactive module, it use its signatures and thats it, if something goes true it, ur infected.

Avira is not very popular at Malware Tips, lots of people are convinced that without a real behavioural module the program cannot catch new malware and yet the results from professional testers show that Avira has been among the top 3-4 for the last 2 years… I’ve had Avira since 2007 and setting aside some conflicts and browsing slowdowns in the past the program has never failed in terms of detection. I can’t say the same about two other top names that I had before Avira.
Behaviour detection is still one of the parts for protecting our users and goes hand in hand with our Cloud detection (APC). The protection evolved years ago to the next level by using automated machine learning with our NightVision (internal name) technology that is supporting the APC in background. https://blog.avira.com/free-antivirus-protection/ https://blog.avira.com/evolutionary-antivirus/
I have experienced the same problem as regards "the launcher update" After launcher update Avira pro reverts back to the free version. A tad annoying.
Thanks for the heads-up, but why is mine still stuck on version 1.2.70.16079 ? What's the update interval for the Launcher right now? Once a month or something?
Lots of people complain about the launcher.Avira would be the best, but without this buggy launcher(or whatever they name it) Another negative issue: https://malwaretips.com/threads/avira-free-action-on-detection-for-real-time-protection.63297/
+1 for the launcher comment. -1 for the comparison to Bitdefender Free. It has no action on detection either. Auto quarantine only. That is the reason I only run it on one old PC I don't care about.
