I know you were just quoting your link but it seems to me KB2952664 to have everything to do with upgrading to a newer OS

Regarding the latest KB2952664 MS stated .........
'The Windows Upgrade Analytics Service uses telemetry data to provide powerful upgrade readiness ... .

Who are they trying to kid ? It's just more snooping so I will not be installing it, nor the rolled up updates containing it.

    Wise words !
For me , that time came over a year ago with the arrival of GWX

My personal opinion is that MS updates for W7 and W8x achieve ...... absolutely NOTHING .

"If you tell your machine “Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates,” the nonsecurity patch rollup won’t be installed during the first Patch Tuesday, but will be installed during the following month. That’s clever, and it looks like it’ll work. The only ones who will get stung by bad nonsecurity patches are the ones who go out of their way to check and approve unchecked Optional nonsecurity patches." http://www.infoworld.com/article/31...repare-for-the-windows-781-patchocalypse.html

    Hello paulderdash :)

What was your "workaround" for your usb dongle issue. Another forum member is reporting the same issue in the HMPA thread.

My workaround is simply to temporarily remove the dongle when re/booting. Haven't found a permanent solution yet, hoping a cumulative update will fix it.
Curiously, it started after AU or one of it's cumulative updates. IIRC it was not there in version 1511.

I am a bit confused about all of this.

I have been running Windows Update with the "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them".

For the most part I have installed them but never the optional ones.

The article above refers to what happens when you check “Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates,” but not what happens if you leave it unchecked.

Mine is currently unchecked and I am wondering what the effect of leaving unchecked will be. Any assistance would be appreciated.

If you leave it unchecked those updates will be offered to you as Optional on Tuesday of 3rd week and you don't have to install it. If updates are OK, MS will release them on next Patch Tuesday in rollup update. So it's wise to leave it uncheked. At least I understand it that way...

Thanks Minimalist. That makes sense. Would I be right in thinking that this option is new and has just been introduced by MS because I don't recollect seeing it before?

I installed the Oct updates but did not get told after that like i usually do that they were successful or not. I only installed .net and the MSRT but not the other Oct update yet.

Security update rollup is new, yes, but regarding moving updates from optional to recommended after some time - it seems that similar process was in place since July and launching of non-security update rollup.

Well I'll leave things as they are for now and see what happens. I have had no notification yet and when I check Windows Update it tells me "Windows is up to date".

As an aside I'm not sure if it's a function of Win Pro or my settings but I have never had any of the troublesome KBs that are frequently mentioned in this thread. For example I do not have KB2952664 installed and have never specifically prevented it from installing to the best of my knowledge. i can only assume that is because I have not asked for recommended updates.

I don't care anymore. I fought for a year to keep Win 7 on my computer. Bring it on Microsoft with your updates. I'll download and install all of them. I give up worrying about this BS that Microsoft is doing. If they bork my two Win 7 computers, good, I'll have evidence for the Class Action Lawsuit which is about to follow (and yes it will hit the fan someday). How could a nice company, Microsoft turnout like this is beyond me. I'll let the forum know if my Win 7 computers bork out, crash or blows up with the updates Microsoft throws at me. I'm glad I transferred all files and personal info to the Mac and nothing is on Windows. Very disappointed with Microsoft and how things are turning out. :thumbd:

Well things have moved on a bit since I last posted. I have had the notification from Windows that there are three important updates for installation. Theses are:
    1. Oct 2016 Security and Quality Rollup for .NET Framework
    2. Oct 2016 Security Quality Monthly Rollup for Win 7 X64 KB3185330
3 Windows Malicious Malware Removal Tool x64

That all seemed reasonable so I clicked on install and it said it was downloading but after an hour had done 0%! I cancelled, tried again with the same result so I have given up for now.

I have checked MS's info re KB3185330 and it says, in part this:

"This security update includes improvements and fixes that were a part of update KB3185278 (released September 20, 2016), and also resolves the following vulnerabilities in Windows.....".

On checking, I do not have KB3185278 installed so I am thinking that this may be the issue. It looks to me that KB3185278 might not have been installed on 22 September because, as I mentioned in my earlier post, I do not have "Give me recommended updates the same way I receive import updates" checked.

I have never had a problem like this before. Should I install KB3185278 first and should I check the "Give me recommended updates box" as mentioned in the earlier article. Or should I do nothing as my system seems to want!

That does not mean KB3185278 is a prerequisite for installing KB3185330.
It means that KB3185278 is included in KB3185330.
There is no need to first install KB3185278 to install KB3185330.

No, there is no need for that.

I don't know why that was.
    Have you tried again later?

Have you installed KB3161608 or KB3172605, earlier?
KB3161608 and later KB3172605 included KB3161647, that offers "an optimization that addresses long scan time for updates".
I cannot tell whether "long scan time for updates" may be your issue, or that it is unrelated.
I you haven't installed KB3161608 or KB3172605, you might try to install KB3172605 and see if that helps.
If you haven't installed it, KB3172605 should be available as optional/recommended update in Windows Update.

Thanks again SM. As you say KB3172605 was available as an optional update and I have now tried installing it first. Unfortunately I get the same result in that nothing downloads. All very strange.

    EDIT
I have also tried downloading all four at the same time with the same zero result. I was beginning to think it might be a server problem at MS but Dragon has just successfully downloaded in a timely manner so I can't see that is the issue.

It took me 6 minutes to download 100% and install 5330 just now before restarting to finish the job.

The only problem I had with this months patches on my Win 7 machine was that I could not advance past the "welcome" screen after it had rebooted, finished configuring the updates and accepted my password at the login screen. It went to "welcome" and stayed that way for an hour before I gave up and pressed & held the power button to force a restart. That worked, although it took much longer to boot, but I think that's normal after an unexpected shut down. My machine has been behaving normally since then, and according to my update history all updates installed correctly. I have a sneaky feeling I had the same issue last month too - same scenario exactly.

The only update I've not installed in recent months is KB2952664, which I was surprised to see return last month. Sneaky sods... What I don't get is why MS offered the update a month or two ago that gets rid of all things relating to updating to Windows 10 (I forget the KB number), but then they offer KB2952664 again?! Weird.

    Success - Finally!!

What I did was to install KB3172605 manually following the instructions in this link:
    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...n/f39a65fa-9d10-42e7-9bc0-7f5096b36d0c?auth=1

That worked fine and then when I used WU, it installed the three updates smoothly. On checking the Installed updates, I notice that on the two occasions that WU failed to install KB3172605, it was identified as a "Recommended" update. The successful manual update indicates that it is an "Important" update. The ways of MS are many and devious!

Anyway I am now good to go and thanks again for all the help guys, especially Stupendous Man.

EDIT Had no sooner finished the above when I was informed of yet another Important update KB3177467. Apparently a stability update so I installed, thankfully without needing a restart. Hoping that's it for now.

    Great!
Yes, that was the way to fix the Windows Update issue if KB3172605 would not install the normal way.

I was offline, otherwise I would have recommended what is described in that Microsoft Community post to download and install KB3172605.
    Manually download and save KB3172605,
set Windows Update to Never check for updates (or, other option: Stop (not disable) the Windows Update service),
run the downloaded and saved KB3172605.
After installation and reboot, set Windows Update to the setting you prefer, again.

With KB3172605 now installed, Windows Update is fixed.

Yes, that is normal after installing KB3185330 (because of the KB3185278 component in KB3185330, if I'm not mistaken).
