I'm guessing with a massive hit to usability.

I don't understand how the heck Defender can be so bad with zero day stuff. Isn't it logical that zero day would be an area it could excel at, if it tried?

I think these results are unfair with Windows Defender because Smart Screen seems to be disabled in those tests, so it doesnt reflect Windows baseline protection.

It's amazing they all score well. Is there any difference between Microsoft Security Essentials 4.9 and Windows Defender?

    Kaspersky, Bitdefender, and Trend Micro
scored 6.0/6.0 on both Protection & Performance.

I find Trend Micro products to be quite heavy, and sometimes replace them with something lighter, when working on customer's computers, so that the computer will run faster.

I completely agree, but since Smart Screen can be enabled with other AVs it isn't considered. Perhaps a real test would be AVs vs updated and current Windows + WD/MSE with Smart Screen enabled.

It seems to me that it would more "fair" to compare AVs + SmartScreen vs. WD + SmartScreen. When you install 3rd party AV it doesn't disable SmartScreen, so to get "real world" results it's best to be tested with default settings (in this case AV+SS).

If Smartscreen is activated during tests, nearly all vendors would get 100% protection score. It would be no fun, would it? :D

I agree, and would be more of a realworld test. I'd like to see how good or bad Defender really is, but it apparently these tests seem a bit unfair how they are testing it.

If you want to see Defender, it needs to be a Windows 10 test from what I'm told...performs much better with 10. I'd like to see more Windows 10 tests anyway...sooner or later, we must move forward. ;)

Indeed. End of life for Windows 7 is still January, 2020 I think.

YMMV - For my computer Trend runs lighter than just about anything else.

Yes, that's probably why they disable it :)

Has smart screen been tested by online video testers?

So are you saying smart screen makes antivirus unneccesary?

I don't know, but there were some tests in past where they tested SmartScreen against Google Safe Browsing and Firefox protection and it fared very well. Will try to find those tests when I get some time.

Nah, but you're probably 100% fine with the built-in Windows Defender if you pair the two.

And if you add UAC to the fray (denying anything strange) it would make it difficult to bypass. My son has used Windows Defender exclusively for nearly two years on Win 8.1 and Win 10, and after checking his computer recently with at least 3 reputable scanners, there was absolutely nothing amiss...
