My aunt has a computer, Win 7 64 bit, that keeps getting popup windows warning that a virus has infected her computer. It seems most everytime she gets them she is on Facebook. I have gone over there to help remove the screen as it wont go away by clicking close or continue so I have to go to Task Manager and shut down Firefox. It also happens when running IE. The popups are not always the same description but say to call a 1-800 number and don't shut down your computer, very annoying. I have tried numerous things but have not been successful at stopping these. She has 360 Security Essentials and have the browsers open up in a sandbox but hasn't helped. I have scanned her computer with numerous virus, rootkit, anti-malware programs and found nothing. I have Ghostery installed also. Is there anything I can do to prevent these from happening? About ready to install Linux Mint to see if that helps....
Have you tried https://toolslib.net/downloads/viewdownload/1-adwcleaner/ ? Ghostery is not, what is used to be, try one of those or both: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ublock-origin - enable Malware filters https://addons.mozilla.org/en-Us/firefox/addon/adguard-adblocker - enable Spyware filter Also try changing DNS: http://www.howtogeek.com/164981/how-to-switch-to-opendns-or-google-dns-to-speed-up-web-browsing/ Check for suspicious entries in https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx - select Options - Hide Microsoft entries
