    Bitdefender-free 2016 beta just auto-updated to 1.0.2.17
After the version update finished, signatures were out of date, as reported by Security-Center.
    A while later signatures auto-updated.

I didn't notice any visible change in the UI.

Been using bitdefender free on my computers for years when i decided to try their antivirus plus, since the random crashes of the tray process on windows 10 was a constant irritation and also wanted to give something back for their work. I was going to buy it but realized I actually had to disable more stuff (profiles, wallet (already have a long running lastpass subscription), safe banking, ssl scanning n what not) than what i wanted to run i.e. the freakin antivirus, also got more nagging popups to use those extra features (i use what i want to, don't want to be nagged)-Ended up installing the beta.
Never once has bf (or hitman pro) ever found an infection on any of my PCs or any malware in the file system anyway... guess i am going to just keep the free beta edition as a sort of safety net. Hopefully it gets a stable version soon.

Really miss the applocker from windows 7 though :(

EDIT:Holy **** my last post here was about switching to bd free on Jul 27, 2013 :D

I can't get Bitdefender free beta to display any tray notifications. It isn't my tray settings, but this BD version. None the less, it does it's job as well as the BD free 2014 version... although it doesn't give the option to perform manual scans. It definitely lets you know when it blocks a page.

Weird, notifications work perfectly on all the 3 windows 10 computers i've installed it on... It probably does indeed work perfectly well at what its supposed to do. I would pay for it in a heartbeat if it was paid...lol

In the paid versions the Active Threat Control engine, avccore.dll, and injectors, avcuf32.dll & avcuf64.dll, were updated from 3.12.14344.6406 to 3.12.15080.6445.

Anyone care to check if those made it into the 1.0.2.21 and 1.0.21.1099 versions?

Interesting to know if or if not.

The tube tester compares latest AVAST with Bitdefender-free 2014..., not 2016!
    Once again:
On demand scan is nowhere near real world...

No button in the UI, but you can always right-click on any drive, folder, or file, to do a on demand scan.

Right click as Hiltihome confirms AND you can drag and drop files or folders onto the UI.

Excellent. It appears BD is Committed to The Cause.

Active Threat Control, the AVC engine, is what would snag most anything that escapes what is commonly misconstrued as the "Bitdefender engine," BDCore and B-HAV, the core engine and heuristic engine.

It looks like this is what I'll recommend to friends/family when it goes stable. And maybe (maybe) myself next year when my BDIS licenses expire. I was not impressed with the 2017 Beta, though it's way too early to judge. Otherwise my experiences over the years with Free 1.0.21.1099 have been quite positive.

    Thanks!

FYI: Sorin G. at the forum is posting up Free 2016 Changelogs. Looks like 1.0.2.21 is the first he's gotten to. He posts in another thread that .21 is still Beta.

Looks like this release offers "play nice" fixes and improvements given that the Core and AVC engines and cloud components are up to date.

So the av engine and malware protection is the same than the paid version?

I'm very pleased to see, that Bitdefender-free-2016 does frequent updates.
    Tonight: 1:11h, 1:53h, 2:17h...

Unfortunately it does not update immediately, when PC awakes from hibernation,
but it does updated, within 5min., after reboot.

I would use this if it didn't prevent me watching the EPL on https://sport.optus.com.au/epl. Netflix was fine but it affected the EPL streaming speed. I hope they fix it.

You should report it to them if you can.

I see the same for the Premium product as well for the reboot and hibernation updating. Waking out of sleep, too. I've never seen it go for more than 15-20 minutes to update after a wake up.

    But it's not unfortunate.

Core scanners (aka the "Bitdefender engine") and Web protection make use of the cloud services.

While it's more efficient to have the latest defs/sigs stored locally, protection isn't compromised.

In the Premiums, even if update is set for every hour, if the hour happens at 15 minutes past and an update is released at 20 past, well then in the meantime... cloud services. That situation bodes for any sig/def updates in competing products, those without cloud services suffering meanwhile.

But your update records indicate Free self-updates more frequently and intermittently. It's as if they're using a push model. That would be interesting.

    That's a ridiculous question.

At default settings Premium might be "the same" as Free for the "av engine and malware protection."

It's impossible to know if Free corresponds to Premium's Permissive, Normal or Aggressive settings for the Core and Active Threat engines. (One of those settings it's not.)

Or if Free scans all files (Premium default) or only applications (Premium option).

Or what priority and access Free is given to the cloud services.

    Or something else.

I'm sure there's a yoot oob "tester" who might better answer your question.

For anyone wanting more to poke at under the hood:

Consider monitoring the updates of the avc3.* binaries that support the Active Threat Control engine.

The extensions are dot fr, gx, hx, ic, and rd in one directory and dot hxi, mx and qx in another.

Updates occur several times a week, with mx, qx and hxi being the most active.

it's not a ridiculous question, I haven't install it so I haven't seen the interface or the options it has, this is why I'm asking. It could be the case that it offers exactly the same protection free vs paid like Avira or Avast for example.

I could not reproduce above frequent updates, the next day.
After an first update on boot, it update every hour: 22:32h, 23:33h, 0:33h, 1:33h, and so on.
Same update frequenz the next day: 19:55h, 20:55h, 21:55h, 22:55h....

Either it was a fluke, or some push updates where sent. I don't know.

Have been using BD free 2014 for several years. Compared it to Panda free, Avast free and others to find the lightest. So far... BD free, then Panda are far the lightest on my machine. BD free has done an excellent job of blocking and protecting. The only drawback is that browser(s) and web pages take a bit longer to open and completely configure.Anyone else notice this? Once pages configure, everything goes light again. Tried the beta version and the slowing became worse. Will continue BD free 2014 despite the slowing problem unless something better comes along.
