    I understand.
With luck, it will finish within reasonable time.
The friend that I mentioned had no such luck. Checking for updates took about a week, installing was taking days.
That's why we stopped that, and used the trick that I mentioned, and which is about the same as what itman mentioned.
So, if not in luck, you can apply the trick to get things going, and then, after installing (KB3020369 and) KB3161608, Windows Update should be fine again.

I can confirm that this has worked. I was then able to successfully install KB3020369 and KB3161608.

Even the 100% CPU usage problem has now gone.

I am downloading updates now, but the % complete is still at 0. Maybe I need another patch for this particular problem.

Great, that's good news. Sometimes the download is a bit slow as the pc processes or does whatever it does during the whole update process. Otherwise, I'm not sure. Once I get the update list here, the download and install usually just takes a few minutes. Let's hope our update checks are quick in August at any rate!

After jumping through all the hoops, it is working good now.

    Thanks all! :thumb:

PS: I am upgrading this computer for my son's school mate who doesn't have a computer to do his school work. I am giving it to him. So, thank you very much.

Ok, I am happy to say that this slow update checking issue is now gone. This month, the update check took 2 minutes. Compare that to 9 hours last month!

Anyhow, I attribute the fix to the June Update Rollup for Win 7 here:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3161608

I installed this after last month's July updates, and this month everything is super fast again. Finally... :)

Hmmm... wow. Interesting, it says on that page now that it's been superceded by the July Update Rollup. I can't vouch for that one, but it may include the updates to the WU Client that were in the June Rollup. Might be worth a try. I installed the June Rollup last month when it still had d/l links.

Edit: Ok, reading the description on this page, it apparently contains the June Rollup fixes plus some additional ones for July. So this should do it:

All I get is the stand alone installer searching for updates, maybe i'm missing something?

You probably need to turn Win Updates OFF and reboot first. Otherwise, it may go into outer space for hours searching for updates without the fix. But yes, it does examine your system for updates before installing itself. But the entire process should be pretty quick.

Tried the update rollup in a win7 VM that didn't have the July and August updates yet, so I could test if the speed was really fixed. First, it said the update was not applicable to my system, so installed the Servicing Stack update that some sources said was required. After that, the update rollup installed successfully. After rebooting the VM I let windows update check for new updates, but now it says there are no updates available for this computer :S

Well, today it did find the updates, even though I rebooted and checked twice yesterday..
Good news is that it took only 1 minute, compared to last time 10 hours :D

I checked for updates on a clean Vista SP2 install, and Windows Update was still searching for updates after a few hours.

I downloaded and installed the current six recommended KBs for Vista x64, as per these directions. After rebooting, it took only about 5 minutes for Windows Update to find 229 updates.

If you're still experiencing slow Windows 7 updates, they have links to the Windows 7 KBs as well.

Yesterday after 5 hours I gave up searching for updates (Vista Ultimate x86). Today I followed your directions, but out of the six recommended KBs for my Vista x86 only the first one installed with a reboot. The others would not proceed claiming that they do not apply to my system. I only hope for KB3177725 to reduce the time required. As I'm writing I installed it 10 minutes ago and finally it found some important updates (4 of them). Thanks Roger it really worked!

    Salutations/Greetings!

Anybody have suggestions for installing Windows Updates for Windows 10 X 64 Bits Operating System?
To bring it up to date, as far as Windows Updates? I have been having problems with update on a couple
of my computers. Or a links to download the current updates, so that I can install?

    Kind regards

Someone should have posted the exact steps in order to get Windows Update working properly in older Windows Operating Systems in the Opening Post.
I know I had to jump through a few hoops when I upgraded an old computer for someone and used Windows 7 Enterprise.

I have now forgotten the KB downloads that I used and the pre-required KB downloads in order to get it working.

Have a look here. The page lists the KBs you need to download and in what order to install them. The page is updated monthly.
