Do you use Windows Defender Limited Periodic Scanning?

Please explain your choice.

Against Norton / Symantec's advice I have it enabled.

 

I don't use it currently, as I disabled WD via group policy in the previous Windows 10 build, so it can't run unless I change that. However, I may enable it, so long as it doesn't use excessive CPU use, like WD does (on some computers) when realtime scanning is enabled.

 

Roger, it does use system resources but only during periods when you're not using your machine. It only runs when Windows does its maintenance while your machine is idle so shouldn't bother you.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to push it on to anyone. I just don't see a problem with an extra second opinion scan, like running MBAM or HMP from time to time.

 

I use it and Norton advice lacks of any sense.

I would like that the WD PS would be more advanced and connected to the cloud, right now I think it just based on signatures and heuristics

 

It looks like it is already connected to the 'cloud'.

 

I'm not sure if there is a difference, sometimes when you enable de limited periodic scanning the cloud options are disabled and sometimes grayed out. I think these are part of the real time and only work if you have this enabled

I would need to change the group policy to enable it to run. However, I just read that WD automatically quarantines threats found. If that is true, I'll give it a miss.

 

I would have to vote yes and no (so I didn't click either). On my PC, no way no how [haven't made the switch permanently yet anyhow], but the PC my child uses [it is Win10] would be a yes.

 

No, I use WD's real-time protection (on my desktop pc) but not the limited periodic scanning as I want to do scans manually.

No, in the previous build of Windows 10 I changed the group policy to disable Windows Defender. After upgrading, it was still disabled.

Yes, it's seems that if you disable it via group policy it will never run.

 

I do, no harm in getting an additional opinion on my system. I was under the impression that's what a lot of people here were looking for.

 

I wonder if the people that voted "No" even have Windows 10 AU in the first place.

 

What is the difference between what they are offering as LPS and simply turning off Defender's real-time protection and scheduling weekly scans? And then you would have this "extra protection" on any version of Windows, if same.

That's good to know, I still have this prehistoric notion about Defender's detection capabilities but that's eroding pretty quickly.

With so many WD haters here I guess nothing has changed and not many are using Limited Periodic Scanning?

 

Anyone have a change of heart and started using WD LPS?

I haven't for months but I've just enabled it as an experiment, not that I really expect WD to find anything Norton missed, but you never know.
