Originally designed for gateways, ClamAV itself was open source GPL and has been around for decades.

ClamAv's copyrights and trademarks were acquired by Sourcefire in 2007.

    Sourcefire acquired Immunet in 2011.

Sourcefire was acquired by Cisco in 2013.

ClamAV is now under some sort of Creative Commons license, if I recall correctly.

(EDITED, see post #22) BTW: The Bitdefender Core is the other engine in this new Immunet as it was in the previous one.

The Clamav engine is disabled by default in Immunet.
The two other engines are enabled by default; one is from BD and the other is probably the house engine. (cloud I guess)

I installed the beta today and was surprised they kept the same weird outdated GUI than 3.1.
I hope they change it somehow.

Yes, thanks for clarifying. ClamAV is a third engine.

I didn't BTW it quite well, but I meant to say they haven't changed the strategy of a commercial product as a local engine as companion to their own cloud service and they stayed with Bitdefender.

As I already run BD, I was hoping for Avira or Kaspersky. :'(

Anyhow, I could not get the Immunet service to start.

But I've been beating the heck out my Windows 10 test system, probably about ten install/uninstalls of various betas in the past few months.

I'll be doing a long overdue re-image before I give Immunet 5 BETA an honest shake.

So this beta version also comes with the Bitdefender engine? If so, I suppose they'll be keeping it on board for their final product. They always had it in their paid version (which will be no more, as far as I know) and now they've decided to add to their free version? That's great. I've always liked this product, but it's sat dead in the water for many years now. Glad it's back in production.

I don't think this uses BD, just Immunet (Ethos and Spero) and ClamAV. Is it still worth using without BD?

Well, how your "I don't think" makes it true?

Pardon.:doubt: Tetra isn't listed in the settings, whereas Ethos Spero and ClamAV are. However, I may be missing something. Earlier posts give the impression BD is included. Happy to be educated.:thumb:

Maybe they will include some 3rd party engine later?

Emsisoft also uses the Bitdefender engine as well as their own.

I have to clarify my comment and I edited that post #7. I could stand to be corrected as this version of Immunet develops.

I did find a directory containing trufos.dll, one of the BD Core Threat Scanning components.

As I couldn't get the service started, I didn't bother to dig into the installation any further. As it's uninstalled, I can't check.

That said, I can't say if I stumbled onto a directory "left over" from the previous version's installer.

Anyone running a successful install of this beta might look for bdcore.dll and a directory (usually named plugins) stuffed full of 100's of sigs/defs.

Or use a utility to see if bdcore.dll is injected into system or the Immunet process(es).

If not, maybe BD has been dropped.

Or the beta hasn't fully implemented it yet.

I still want Avira or Kasperesky as a companion engine.

    • Basic Detection and Removal of bots, viruses, worms, trojans, keyloggers, and spyware.
    • Basic Network Scanning including Quick Scan, On-Demand Scan, and On-Access Scan
Basic detection and removal? Wow! Ok, I guess I'll pass on this one.

The word "basic" is a bother? Truly? (Or are you posting with "tongue in cheek"?)

"Basic" <> inferior or menial or secondary. IMO Immunet used "basic" in the sense of "fundamental, sufficient, state of the art." It is commendable that they avoided the usual puffery which is the wont of most advertisements.
