    Are you talking about this (attached image)? I don't think that's an advertisement, it's just part of facebook which is kind of interesting to me.

    @hayc59 Have you tried using the "element picker" to remove it?

    FBPurity is the simplest method, gives you more control of Facebook for sure :) There's another extension but the name escapes me.

    BTW, I noticed that my browser kept receiving and sending data when ad.nl (Dutch newspaper) was opened. After blocking s2.ad.nl, it stopped, does anyone know how this is possible? I didn't know sites could generate traffic even when pages are already loaded? Obviously there was no streaming going on.

    Traffic will still be generated after a web-page has rendered....
    CSS and Javascript requests (such as jQuery/ Social Media Buttons/ Google Analytics) for example will make additional requests after a page has loaded.
    Even just increasing a Youtube video size from "Default" to "Theatre" will trigger additional request(s)..

    This practice is generally considered a positive one because initial page-rendering times are made considerably faster by ruling out requests that are not needed for the page to load,and are only needed once additional actions on the page have been performed..

    As an example....Here is an experiment that one can perform with just "Youtube" & "uBlock Origin"...
    1.Open the Youtube "Home Page" in a tab.
    2.Click on your uBlock Origin Icon and then open the "Logger"
    3.Refresh the Youtube Page to see the Logger show the initial requests,(and make sure that the requests have stopped)..
    4.Take a mental note of the time of that last request (shown in the left-column of the logger.)
    5.Now go back to the Youtube page and scroll down to the bottom.
    6.Now look back at the uBlock Origin logger to see the requests made since the last one that you noted.

    Yes, this might explain it. But the thing is, I'm blocking most, if not all trackers. Luckily I don't see this happening quite often.

    Are you blocking 3rd party scripts & frames by default?.....
    Even if you have to "noop" 3rd party scripts on a specific website,I have found that I rarely have to also "noop" 3rd party frames as well.

    Copy "chrome://ublock0/content/dashboard.html#settings.html" into your URL-bar to open the dashboard. At the bottom you can revert to default.

    Hello
    i am sorry if this has been answered but i cant read all 87 pages of this thread :/

    so i am using uBlock origin and thought i will try it with uMatrix now, but you cant really find a good howto on how you config them to work smoothly together.
    i was using uBlock in advanced mode, so dynamic filtering, with the standard filters active.

    i've read in one of countless threads that some people disable advanced mode, malware filter lists and peter lowes ad list in Ublock when they use it with uMatrix, so i did that.
    Can anyone who uses both help me out please?
    whats the best configuration in both uBlock and uMatrix when you use them together?
    (yes i am willing to get annoyed and spend time on this, so please no "use ublock only, its easier" stuff :D)

    thank you in advance, would appreciate any help :)

    I use them together. There is a lot of info on the uMatrix thread which is a lot shorter than this thread and a lot of detail on the umatrix github site. Somewhere in the umatrix thread there is a set of rules that someone posted which are commonly seen 3rd party scripts/frames etc that make starting with it much easier I've never thanked that person but I should get around to doing that. It took me a long time to 'get it' but now its so easy I love the security it provides.

    I put all my filter lists in ublocko for convenience but umatrix handles hosts files better than ublock or so I understand.

    Anyone else found that pictures on How-To Geek articles (example) are removed?

    @The Seeker ...
    Using uBlock I went to the example,but I didn't detect any removed pictures.:doubt:
    I played about for a few minutes but the only way that I could remove the pictures is by a local image block.
    I have 3rd party scripts/frames blocked,and remote fonts/large media elements....I even have javascript blocked through google,yet I didn't detect the missing pictures that you mention..
    Do you have any other examples of pages that this happens to you on?

    I am able to reproduce the issue. Looks like the site is using a some sort of tracking image (not completely sure). If that image is loaded only, then the remaining images are loaded. Else blocked.

    This particular questionable image (http://www.howtogeek.com/pagespeed_static/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif) is currently blocked by filter /pagespeed_static/*$image
    And it is present in following filter lists -
    • Fanboy Enhaced Tracking List
    • Fanboy Ultimate List

    Below is the filter, which will fool the site by loading a dummy image instead. Hence remaining images are loaded properly..
    Code:
    ||howtogeek.com/pagespeed_static/*.gif$image,redirect=2x2-transparent.png
    @gorhill
    I believe this filter might be the candidate in uBlock's Default filter lists.

    That's it. I disabled the Fanboy Enhaced Tracking List and the images loaded fine. Thanks so much for tracking this down.

    You are welcome. However I would recommend against disabling a filter list unless it causes too many issues.

    You may want to use the filter I have provided. It will fix the issue for that site.

    I've since re-enabled the filter list - only disabled to check to see whether it was the culprit. I will use the filter you provided. Thanks again.

    How do I add a filter to uBlock that's not already on the list of available filters?

    Scroll down on the filters list tab until you see the custom filters box and then you add the link of the filter list and hit apply and make sure the list is updated. On mobile rn I could give you better instructions but can not right now sorry.

    I believe I'm blocking only third party scripts. But like I said before, it seems that certain sites will continue to generate traffic via first party scripts, I believe that's what happened on ad.nl, but I'm not sure what data is being transfered.

    I admit that I'm puzzled. You believe ...? I mean isn't it evident what you block by simply looking at the Dynamic Filtering pane?

    And for further investigation you can open the logger.
