The trouble is though that common sense isn't that common. ;)

When I know I'm going to browse the internet and check websites that may be suspicious or plug in third party USB flash drives, I use Shadow Defender which runs the system in a virtual environment, it is easy and effective and has never failed since 2007, furthermore it allows quick tests for software that doesn't need a reboot. This would be my first choice if I had to pick only one.

Shadow Defender, SpyShelter, Exe Radar Pro - as still in developing
System Safety Monitor, Online Armor, ThreatFire, Keriver 1-Click - as "dead" apps

    • Adguard
    • AppGuard
    • NVT ERP
    • Reboot Restore Rx
    • ReHIPS
    • Sandboxie
    • Shadow Defender
    • TinyWall
    • Windows Standard User Account
If I was given only a single choice then the choice would be very simple - AppGuard; a customized Lock Down mode provides high system security.

Given a second choice it would be Shadow Defender.

I use IObit Malware Fighter on some of my computers, and Tencent PC Manager on others. But, I don't have a favourite. These days, I find it hard to get attached to any one particular security product.

Basically, I like any antivirus which is exceptionally light, has good detection rates, doesn't give excessive false positives and can be configured to prompt for what action you want to take when threats are found, rather than automatically quarantining them.

Maybe because I fiddle around in my live environment so much, but Macrium Reflect Home. But really, backups are the most important thing I wouldn't compute without.
