Somehow I renewed my DreamSpark subscription, so WIndows Server 2016 Datacentre is quite tempting as the host of my family's home server. I believe it has a dual Intel Xeon X5365 (3.0 GHz), 32 GB of RAM, and plenty of HDD space. Of course I'm going to use Hyper-V. The other option would be VMware ESXi (most likely free version), or putting the Windows Server 2016 as a guest, but I have a feeling that is not the best solution. Or I could use some server Linux, but might as well use the license to its full potential right? Now the problem is, most of the client machines in my family have the Home version of Windows 10. That doesn't have Remote Desktop support, and TeamViewer's free version doesn't support Windows Server. So basically I'm looking for the most cost-effective option. I don't require a lot of features, but performance and file sharing are key. Note that this project probably won't go through until earliest end of September. That is when we're moving. Or maybe Microsoft will delay it even further lol. But anyways, what is my best option here? All opinions welcome.
Forgot to mention that although we do have monitors for the server, I'd like to go headless or at least have control over the resolution. And Windows Remote Desktop is an option, because file sharing can easily be handled by HomeGroup or SMB and I do want (but don't need) Windows 10 Pro+. Just wish I was more careful with those MSDNAA licenses...
I am not sure if i have misread the question but with windows 10 home version you will be able to connect to your headless windows 2016 with remote desktop. the feature that is missing from windows 10 home is the ability to remotely connect to a windows 10 home pc from another pc.
Oh, been quite a while since I last used Remote Desktop and must've misread some misleading online comparison. Thanks, I found Remote Desktop already on the start menu. One thing that may be useful which is only on Pro+ is RSAT. That I'll wait and see whether I need it or not.
