This software is necessary even with VPN?

If you choose a good enough VPN, that provides all the bells and whistles, then DNSCrypt really isn't necessary.

Now, there are some VPN's that provide good service, but terrible spoofing protection, which in that case DNSCrypt and a VPN would be ideal.

DNSCrypt on a unsecured network is leaps and bounds better than having nothing at all, but if you really are worried about privacy and security on these types of networks, then I would still highly recommend a VPN.

If you're on a network, such as your home, then DNSCrypt is enough IMO.

I had some issues with some of the software I was using, so, I am in the process of experimenting once again.

Because of this, I had to take down my signature.

  5. Simple security setup on my Asus transformer with windows 8,1 (down graded from Windows 10)

Running standard user, set UAC to block elevation for unsigned, set Smartscreen to require Admin consent (which practically makes Smartscreen an anti exec/whitelist), disabled WindowS Defender and enabled WFW two way. Added EMET for Office Apps and MemProtect for Chrome (running Appcontainer and Plugins in Sys32 lockdown)

    @Windows_Security :

Are you still running that Asus Transformer with a downgrade from Win10 to Win8.1 ??

I remember you had problems with the Asus bloat automatically being downloaded and installed repeatedly.

When on Win10, then just go to "Control Panel > System > Advanced system settings > the "Hardware" tab > Device Installation Settings".

Here you can choose "if you want to automatically download manufacturers apps and custom icons available for your device".

Set this to No, and you will no longer be pestered with those horrible OEM applications that can (and will) destroy any otherwise well functioning OS.

That way you can enjoy Windows 10 again.

(When will those OEM vendors learn, that not a single person on the planet are interested in their OEM apps or those ridiculous changes they make in the factory installed OS. So many problems could be avoided, if the OEM vendors stopped messing with the OS).

or just format and clean install the OS after buying the new computer? ;)

Absolutely. I always clears the drives and installs a virgin edition of the OS.

Best way to get rid of all the OEM crap applications and all the OEM crap modifications to the OS.

Sadly some OEM vendors has started to upload their crap to the Microsoft Store, and if you do not set the setting I mentioned to NO - then the OEM crap will also download on a store-bought virgin OS installation.

And at least one OEM vendor has even enabled a UEFI setting that downloads their OEM crap even if you change drives and install your own store-bought OS.

It's getting to the point where the OEM software and modifications ought to be labeled malware and cleaned when running a Defender scan.

I haven't been around here in months, and my setup hasn't changed either. I'm stopping in to check and see if opinions & info./specifics about VPN's have changed mainly. I don't have any right now.

I'm still running XP Pro SP3 with the POSReady tweak. Comodo FW with Alerts on Very High and all Advanced options checked. D+ on Paranoid Mode and new files treated as Untrusted. Sandboxie doing it's thing. Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit... I have like a dozen shields running. I make a several custom ones. I recently got an email that my subscription was up and I renewed it... well worth it for just $24.95 or so on an XP machine that can't take advantage of EMET. Even though I'm still using v.1.06.1.1019 It's still my favorite version. Also using VT Hash Check, you can upload files now like 4X bigger than you once could. MBAM, Hitman Pro, TDSS KIller also provide scan options.

Still using Firefox v27.0.1, but with a useragentstring tweak in about:config to make sites think I'm using whatever the newest version is (I forget), and Windows 7 32-bit. Tons of other about:config tweaks too. And a useful assortment of addons and sub lists for Adblock Edge (EasyList, EasyPrivacy, Fanboy's Annoyance List, Malware Domains).

I have 2 Netgear R6300v2 routers, but no more VPN's to put in them. I have them both flashed with dd-wrt Open VPN, but am thinking of trying something else and am in here to ask around about other options, like Tomato, MyOpenRouter, OpenWRT, etc... And I'm eagerly awaiting DOCSIS 3.1... not just for it's existence but for it to be ironed out. I remember when a new Arris Surboard (white) came out with 32 channels down but it didn't have an important security feature enabled.

    Well... I missed everyone.

Very interesting those tweaks to finalize browder security (by using what is already build-in to software I am using).

Only copy text manipulation POC for chrome does not seem to touch the clipboard cache.

    please keep posting your findings

Is Bitdefender or Avira lighter in terms of resources versus avast free? Currently using in an old laptop avast free and i would like to know if there is something lighter at the same level of protection.

    Windows 7, UAC - max
Windows 10 Firewall Control (sphinx-soft) Plus - default deny, ask for outbound
SphyShelter free - Certified applications - ask user
    VoodooShield - Always on
    MalwareBytes AntiExploit with additional shields
Zemana Antimalware - resident, Pandora on

Here's good addition of protection without overlapping:
    W10FC protects system files,
SpyShelter watches suspicious behavior of applications,
    VoodooShild - great AntiExecutable,
    MBAE - covers exploits
    Zamana Antimalware - watches malware.

In spite of such abundance of security apps the setup feels very light on my PC.
What I like here I could make the Guest account for other people where this setup won't ask anything. It will silently block possibly unwanted activity.
