I guess it could be if you are one of the million and had no say in the matter.

It sure is a problem to those people, there's no argument in that. However, still, it could be a lot worse. 1 M people isn't that much for Google, I thought they'd have access to a lot more than that.

Google already seem to know my medical history. I'm guessing they read my mail.

It was about time "big data" was put to something useful.

If this data can be used to enhance the medical field, save lives, etc. I really have no problem with it. I'm for the big data being used for the well being of the population (like health), not for personal profit (like advertising).

I doubt any of the patients have been asked if they mind every bit of their private medical life (plus personal info details such as name etc) being handed over to Google.
Call me a skeptic, but if its health analysis along side data mining I know which one Google is better at.

Couldn't agree more. As with many things in life, they can be used or (ab)used.

You doubt? Always great when people try to debate with suspicions and their feelings instead of facts.

Yeah because the government is so much more trustworthy, and far more reliable at keeping data secure. What people should do is pay more taxes so the government can reinvent the wheel, creating a duplicate system, costing 4 times as much, being 4 times as flawed and taking 20 years to get there. Meanwhile the system will be hacked 3 times and the data will be leaked due to bureaucracy getting in the way of secure implementation.

Yeah, imagine choosing to submit anonymous data for the professionals to do it instead, it's not like they are throwing this data around to companies everywhere. For once, the government is making a smart decision. A decision that will save the tax player money and reap the most successful results. Meanwhile for those that enjoy opting out of organ donation, they can also opt out of said data sharing, because "privacy".

As it says here, it's more the secrecy surrounding this that is concerning

    https://www.newscientist.com/articl...a-if-theres-nothing-to-hide-why-be-secretive/

Some info for those folk who may wish to opt-out (although full details have yet to be provided by NHS and Google)

I think it would be too costly to ask everyone, but I'm likely wrong.

It is not Google's responsibility to make announcements. They have been paid to do a job and in this case, they shouldn't be commenting on it at all. It isn't their data, yet people seem to think that they should be the ones commenting on it. Why? Do you expect other companies to comment on the work they do for Governments? I think not, they only risk damaging their contract.

If you want commentary, start hounding the Government for it. They are the only ones in the position to choose what they want to reveal. Since they love transparency, good luck with that.

Science never needed this type of things to progress, the argument to our own good is a lie.

You have your opinion, and I have mine.
Data is a crucial part of science, without data, it's hard to do anything. It's basically "trial and error" until you reach what you're looking for, and it's not that effective.

Mankind never needed data to analyze stuff?
If this is done in accordance with applicable laws, ethically approved and all data is proper anonymous, why not?
Mankind never needed to address starvation and obesity at the same time.
Times change. Obesity-diabetes related illnesses will skyrocket. Earlier (better) diagnosis of related illnesses can save lives, offer more/longer quality of live and save money to spend elsewhere on healthcare etc.

Serious breach of confidentiality to include identifiable information without anyone's consent. There's no justification for this.

Why do research ethics no longer matter when Google becomes involved?

Maybe because they will give us free stuff and they will never use data they have for something "bad"? ;)
