    Likewise.

With Macrium Reflect i'm afraid that I been neglecting DS.

It's always good to have on a hand more than one backup vendor especially this very long trusted app I been using since 98.

Version 1.44.0.17289 has been posted. There were enough improvements to warrant the closest thing we've seen to a changelog in over 2 years!

    V1.44 - April 2016: Drive Snapshot 1.44
    • Support for Windows 10
    • Restore complete disks with multiple partitions at once
    • Connect to remote network shares with Snapshot
    • NT4sp6 is supported again. If you encounter any problems please use Snapshot.exe 1.40 and send us an email

Although Macrium 6 has assumed these backup duties now for my Win 8 systems it's always good to be able to have a failsafe alternative and for me DS is performed as flawless as any imager I have ever used and for many years at that.

So Thanks for the update notice. This update will all but fully complete my fallback imaging scenario

Version 1.44.0.17301 has been posted. One could argue that it's a bug fix in light of the very recent "significant" version upgrade.

Yes, this is a bug fix release. There was a bug in DS when it imaged an EXT4 file systems on a GPT disk. This bug will cause Drive Snapshot to back up all disk sectors instead of only used sectors, therefore it will take hours to image, let's say, a mere 20GB data on a 160GB EXT4 partition, and the size of the disk image is also huge ~130GB. I reported this bug to them about a week or so ago, sent them log files to help them find the problem. After a few rounds, Hardy @ Tom Ehlert Software finally fixed this EXT4 on GPT bug in this release last night. We both confirmed on our systems that this bug was gone. So it's good to go now for Linux EXT4 disk imaging on either GPT/MBR disks.

Wowser!!! I haven't downloaded recent builds, but after seeing the comments here, decided to take a look. Wow Tom has been busy. He's added a new restore from windows. You just setup the restore, and it reboots, restores, using the native windows api, and then runs chkdsk so you can be sure the disk is good. It's cut my restore time with DS in half.

    MerleOne,

I looked at it with Win10 and the option to do what Pete did was there. But you can only do a partition restore, not an Entire drive restore. Instead, I restored an Entire drive image of UEFI Win10 to a new empty SSD. No problems except the restore took five times longer than I recall from past tests. I'll try it again.

Still slow. Restoring an Entire drive image to the same drive. Anyone else have this slow restore experience?

Edit... a partition restore was slow too (from a WinPE, I haven't tried Pete's method yet)
Edit... same time using Pete's method

FUnny, worked great on one machine, but on the other machine, it was flakey. He may need to tune it.

Interesting. I have not tested the restore process. In this case, I encourage you folks go ahead and shoot an email to Tom, and ask them to investigate this issue. They are normally pretty responsive to bug reports.

Yeah i'm always a little skiddish when a Win 7 x64 makes for simple satisfaction but little or no word from 8-8.1 peeps.

Worth waiting to see who goes first but if the new restore is as good as Pete's results on my 8.1 then i'm all good for backup solutions.

Never tried DS before but @Peter2150 - is this for a system disk restore also?

Peter, Does it automatically run chdsk? I never run chkdsk, it's caused me problems in the past.

I meant - if I want to restore my system disk, I thought one had to boot from a DOS recovery disk. So now one can just restore from within Windows?
Also, if I want to try DS - can I use the normal version, or do I need the 64bit version if both my laptops are 64-bit?
Edit: It seems one does not need to install it? I like that idea, using it like a portable app.

The new restore mode does its restore at what's known as the Native NT API level... this is a place during the BOOT process that occurs before Windows is actually loaded but contains many standard Windows I/O calls for storage manipulation. Xeroweight's FlashBack product also uses this restoration point in its latest release. I believe the old method also continues to work... it will have to for bare metal restore to work properly.

I can't answer the x64 question in relation to DS, but x86 versions of most other BOOTable imagers work just fine on x64-based platforms... I see no reason DS would be any different. I don't believe that is the case if you're trying to use the Native NT API level type of restore, I don't know for sure... I will await a correction on this if someone knows more at this stage.

    Thanks for that info RF.
Would like to give it a try, no problem testing the backup, but just a bit hesitant to test a restore in case it bricks my system. Probably best to do a Macrium image beforehand. :)

Be aware that the Native NT API does not include such driver capability as USB3 (maybe USB2) and Network access. Based on that, if your images are on anything other than an internal disk, they may not be restorable... at least these are the shortcomings noticed with other Native NT API types of operations.

Using the standard WinPE type of stand-alone restoration should work just fine... WinPE usually contains most of the necessary drivers.

It would appear it does. It has run on both machines, and it doesn't find any problems. I ususally run chkdsk from the Macrium Recovery environment, mainly because it stays on the screen.

    I run the x64, and I don't install it.
