'Adding snaps for secure, transactional packages in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS' Quite the step from Ubuntu. 'Every' app/package having it's own libraries, running sandboxed. https://insights.ubuntu.com/2016/04/13/snaps-for-classic-ubuntu/ What's the communis opinio? "Sure, nice and handy!" or "Multi-libraries?->RAGE!"?
First step toward running on Windows as isolated packages/apps. Onion layer of libs, which is why ZFS was mentioned, to save space, but allow versioning. This could be a nice set of solutions. Mrk
Sounds like a good move. Now I want to try out 16.04 upon its release, rather than wait for 3 more months before I switch to it from 14.04.
I just switched from Arch to Ubuntu. This idea really sounds good, but what about critical components like drivers or Kernel modules? How would they work with Snaps?
I was shocked too for a while, but then I realized I was right all along I can't use that. They did improve the overall system stability since 2012, but Ubuntu still has problems... system errors, package management errors, dependencies unmet, programs crashing, black screen on boot, etc. I'll try Debian Sid now, and if that is also a mess then I'll just go back to Arch. My problem with Linux in the past was FGLRX, but now Mesa is making me mad as well. I just opened an issue on VALVe's Github page yesterday regarding an issue with Team Fortress 2 and Mesa/Radeon that happens on all distros with recent Mesa versions. Then the Radeon developers (the stack embedded in the Kernel) pushed a commit that makes my screen flicker.... I can set the power level to High, but then my card consumes full power all the time, which is ridiculous. All these problems is what pushes me to Windows sometimes. Microsoft spies, subjugates, and treats users like shyte, but at least I know everything will work if Iinstall Windows. Then I'll feel "dirty", regret using it, and come back to Linux. And the cycle starts over. And sometimes I do want to try new things, like the new Ubuntu 16.04. But then all Linux's problems start to re-appear, and the cycle keeps moving on
Does Ubuntu 16.04 LTS officially release on April 21st? I hear rumor of that release date, but can't find anything official.
news.softpedia.com/news/developer-claims-that-canonical-s-new-snap-format-isn-t-secure-on-ubuntu-desktop-503287.shtml For the time being, I recommend people to just avoid it, otherwise we're about to see Linux turn into MacOS and their unsecure similar feature.
