I used ZoneAlarm firewall for the last few years on my main rig. It was pretty good, and I liked the light behavior based HIPS too. I did have a few issues with it though, which is why I finally uninstalled it and will continue with just Glasswire or Windows Firewall Control. I may though in the future install ZoneAlarm 14 firewall and antivirus. Problems I had: It used to block Windows hotspot (aka Internet Connection Sharing), although later this issue went away, it conflicted with Rosetta Stone unless ipv6 filtering was disabled, sometimes the settings did not stick for individual programs, at some point it started to block all new processes by default without asking, which was kind of good but also inconvenient (also, I think this was a bug).

Actually ZoneAlarm is of USA company Check Point. Kaspersky engine is for AV component only.

"Check Point, an Israeli company specializing in network security, primarily serves larger financial customers but is making inroads into the small business market. The company's core products are software packages and hardware appliances which fortify corporate networks; essentially, Check Point works in the same territory as rivals such as Cisco and Dell, but in a pure security space. Apart from security divisions of those multinational tech giants, similar products are also offered by rivalsSourcefire and Fortinet alongside a host of others."

"The ZoneAlarm Uninstall Tool will uninstall all versions of the ZoneAlarm firewall from your computer in the event that it will not uninstall properly via the Windows control panel. When you run the program it will ask if you want to remove the ZoneAlarm Extreme version, but will in fact remove all versions of the ZoneAlarm Firewall"......http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/zonealarm-uninstall-tool/

I'm confused, is ZoneAlarm only offering Free Firewall now and no AV+FW anymore? I mean through actual webpage and not just a download link on changelog page? Just wondering.

I think they still offer the free AV+FW, but as I recall it has always been difficult to find it on their webpage. Majorgeeks lists it here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/zonealarm_free_antivirus_firewall.html

I haven't tried version 14, but at least with v.13 the firewall was first rate but the antivirus was average at best.

Not sure why they don't offer it the usual way and not through some digged up changelog pages without any description. It just seems weird.

Not really, they still using the latest Kaspersky SDK, the engine is equivalent to the current version of their business products. But remember that they only use their clould and AV signature.

I can not attest as to ZA's effectiveness, but I can say that their stuff completely bogs down my quad core win 10 64 system to a absolute crawl. I'll never use it again.

The free Firewall/AV combo was recently updated as seen here - http://sc1.checkpoint.com/sc1/za/release-history/zafavfw.html and am using this freebie for the first time on a Windows 10 64bit i5 tablet computer and am quite impressed actually. Only negative i see is a longer restart/shutdown time. Startup time is still quick - no change.

Question: Can the updater be set and triggered on a schedule through Windows 10 or via the use of a third party program to update let's say hourly as Zonealarm Free only updates every 8 hours? Which exe/process triggers the Zonealarm updater??.

    Thanks!

    Every 8 hours? I thought it's just once a day ... :doubt:

That may be so as i am a new user but i manually updated and the gui showed the next scheduled update was 8 hours later. This is why i'm trying to locate in the Zonealarm "Program Files" folder which "process" starts the updater which i hope to try and trigger "hourly" through the use of a scheduler either in windows 10 or some third party program - if this is possible ;)

Have you already found the update process? I'm not sure if there is even a separate file ...

has this become worse lately? i dl'ed a malware pack from malwaretips today, it contained 13 samples and za free av+fw caught ZERO. the pack was from the 7th april i think, and i updated the defs just minutes before scanning. it caught nothing both at extract and at manual scan..

Does ZA free AV+FW has cloud detection?
