Thanks! After reading your post I went to update Chrome only to find it had already silently updated earlier today, same on two machines. I hadn't opened Chrome before this.

I'm not sure if you're saying this because you're surprised, but that functionality is intended. It runs a service to do so.

I normally see an update posted here and manually update by checking Help > About Google Chrome before it automatically updates, is all.

It uses built-in version. The one you installed is for Firefox and Chromium and not Chrome.

@mantra Google Chrome can also pick up on that separately installed PPAPI Flash as well. Particularly, for example, if Chrome has not updated it's built-in Flash Player, and say you update (or has automatically updated) the separate PPAPI Flash, it will use whichever one is newer. You can also even disable the built-in Flash Player and alternatively use that separate PPAPI version. Regardless, binaries are identical anyway and digitally signed by Adobe just the same. Anyway, this is my use-case from 1-2 previous versions of Google Chrome. It is quite possible that Google has changed this functionality since I had last tinkered with it. I use Chromium builds now. But it's all essentially the same in the end.

I created a proper folder for x64 Chrome in Programs where x64 programs are supposed to reside and moved the x64 folder containing the application to the correct place. I installed the correct shortcut pointing to the new location in Start Menu and everything works.

Then I trashed the original x86 folder with x64 Chrome in it, allowing me to install the correct x86 Chrome to it.

Only problem is updater no longer works for x64 so I went ahead and copied the update folder to the new location so hopefully, it will start running again.

So you're basically causing problems for yourself for the sake of it just because you didn't like it residing in a folder called "x86". Ok!

Chrome is one or the other.

You cannot choose where to install Chrome.
