There is also the question on what is the proper way to test for exploits. Below is an excerpt from the test report for Eset performed by NSS Labs last year on a number of retail products:

ESET Smart Security 8 v8.0.203.0 was installed in the NSS Labs live stack exploit test harness as part of NSS’ continuous testing of consumer anti-malware products. ESET Smart Security 8 was subjected to thorough testing for exploit protection at the NSS facility in Austin, Texas, based on the Security Stack: Test Methodology v1.5. NSS test methodologies are available at www.nsslabs.com. This test includes a total of 1291 live (real-time) web-based exploits being used by threat actors in active campaigns identified with the NSS Cyber Advanced Warning System between February 1, 2015 and March 31, 2015. This test was conducted free of charge, and NSS did not receive any compensation for ESET’s participation. Consumer anti-malware products are installed with default settings. When a choice is required to continue installation, the more secure setting is selected. Blocking exploits is a critical component of an anti-malware product. When an exploit is blocked, the delivery of known and unknown malware is also blocked. Additionally, payloads such as privilege escalation and reverse shells are prevented. For this reason, blocking exploits offers more comprehensive protection than malware protection alone. Note what I underlined above. The testing was performed on a 24/7 continuous basis for a period of 2 months. Eset by the way was the highest scoring product scoring essentially 100%.

All I can say is that I hope their payed tests are way better, because the free ones don't exactly provide a lot of info.
