I have the HIPS turned off on comodo, because I am also using spyshelter free, which has its own HIPS.
In such a case, do I gain protection from comodo, or is it basically doing what windows firewall would do?

Alternatively, maybe I should turn off system protection in spyshelter, and turn on HIPS in Comodo?
I do enjoy the "installer mode" in the spyshelter pop-ups, you can allow all actions for that process, including child processes, all in one click.

COMODO HIPS is much better than SpyShelter Free HIPS module; SpS Free HIPS is limited functionality whereas COMODO HIPS is fully functional.

comodo keeps freezing on me, even though I turned off system protection in spyshelter to avoid conflicts.
is comodo ready for windows 10?
I have MB anti-exploit and MB anti-ransomware running. Maybe that is the problem.

I can't commenton MBAR or MBAE as I only used MBAM, but yes COMODO is Windows 10 ready, I use it with Avira and MBAM.

Comodo is working fine on all of my 64-bit Window 10 Systems with MBAE. I would suspect that your incompatibility is with another software program. General advice is to double check that windows firewall is actually disabled. Also, another common issue with comodo and firefox in particular is that users keep older profiles to avoid losing their configuration. In my experience, it's best to do a complete uninstall and reinstall to avoid any problems.

thanks. my guess is that I should completely uninstall spyshelter before installing comodo. Just disabling at startup is not always enough to solve conflicts.

the real question is how much I stand to gain from installing comodo.

When I started this thread, I was using windows defender. But the configuration I am playing with now is bitdefender total security 2016, with the firewall module turned off, because it was preventing me from making FTP connection. Instead I am using windows firewall with glasswire. I also am running spyshelter free. And MBAE. I probably sound paranoid. It's more for fun than because I actually think I need all this stuff.

With the combined HIPS of bitdefender total and spyshelter free, maybe comodo won't really add much for me, even if it would work?

Well Bit Defender seems to be a full featured security suite. You could probably just run bit defender with full protection enabled and check for major overlap with spy shelter. Any reason in particular you don't use Bit defenders firewall? Some users pick security software based upon the graphical design in terms of ease-of-use and others follow the crowd in picking software that gets good reviews, performs well in tests, etc. I think it's important for users to pick software that you feel comfortable with using. Keep in mind a layered defense approach that uses security from different vendors is going to be more problematic in the long-term due to incompatibility issues and the trend for security vendors to bloat their products with redundant security features. In my personal opinion, comodo firewall is superior to most other third-party firewalls. But it isn't ideal for the uninitiated users that expect things to just work out of the box. It is also important that users assess what they use the computer system for. Do you do online banking? If yes, then you should compare Bit Defenders safe banking feature which uses a dedicated browser. How does this compare with other safe browsing options, including comodo's virtual kiosk and dedicate browser. Ultimately, no one can tell you what you should do, but I'd urge caution in running to many security solutions that overlap in protection. Because while you might think your getting better all-around security, your actually compromising it.

@Techwiz, thanks for detailed advice! I don't use bitdefender firewall because it blocks FTP. I can't upload files to my website.

I am interested to hear why comodo is better. Let's put the HIPS aside for a moment. What's better about the firewall itself?

right. I discovered that for bitdefender to install properly, first MBAE must be uninstalled. Later, it can be reinstalled. It is specifically made to work in conjunction with AV.
Also spyshelter is specifically made to work in conjunction with AV, and the latest free version works pretty well for me on windows 10, without crashes and conflicts. (As long as I don't install comodo, that is.)

edit: but thanks for the heads up! I now realized there are other potential conflicts here, and I am in the process of checking that out.

forget that 3rd-party crap and stick with the windows firewall + binisoft
hips do not have advantages - it sucks and is for paranoids.
MBAE ist free for browsers and plugins (vs ransom and co injections)
forget bitdefender at all, this people cant get BD proper working on win10 - why trust them elsewhere?

windows defender + mpenableplus tweak (adware scan) is pretty good - not full blown anti-something but strong enough for the most users.

there were some problems with bitdefender in the beginning, but now it seems to work pretty well on windows 10.
The only real issue I still have with it is the firewall preventing FTP connections. But I saw somebody complaining to bitdefender about that even on windows 7.

edit: okay, I gave the FTP another try, this time with WinSCP, and you know what, it works, even with Bitdefender firewall running on default settings.

One of the primary reasons that I use comodo is because it is not just another standalone firewall. The purpose of a firewall is to enforce a set of network security policies across network connections. It's application monitoring, robust HIPS, sandbox protection, and high customization are what appeal to me. I have also take advantage of their other features including the virtual desktop and kill switch. But if I am to be absolutely honest, I enjoy tinkering and hardening computer systems and most of the firewall products on the market are tailored for people that just want something that works out of the box. I've been using comodo firewall a long time, so I'll admit that I'm probably very biased with my opinion.

    sounds good, thanks for explanation.
I am presently trying out VoodooShield, which is more of a consumer-oriented product, for non expert users such as myself. It tries to make anti-executable easy.
Do you (or someone else) have an opinion about VoodooShield?

after using Comodo firewall for a little while I see it gives the user more control over the system, and more info about what is taking place on the network. But the HIPS seems to be the main thing. Once you get the hang of it, it is a pretty powerful tool.

Is Comodo Free still making it s own rules no matter what you set ?!It felt like it was it s own master.
Last time i ve installed it was a useless piece of firewall.
I liked 3.1x, since then it s really unusable for me.
I find no reason to use it as the Windows build in firewall can do it s job almost the same way.It will pop rules you ve never allowed out of nowhere.

okay, but where can you get a decent HIPS? WF doesn't give you that.

Comodo has a "forgetting bug", by which it forgets your entire set of rules.
So it is recommended to export your settings, because you never can know if and when the forgetting bug will bite.

I wish to know the reasons for you says this. Comodo fw, also without HIPS, it's always been one of stronger fw, together Online Armor.

Even without the HIPS, Comodo still has automatic sandboxing of all unknown exe files, and I think it is turned on by default in Comodo 8. It is a pretty powerful protection.
But I have to agree with Sm3K3R, that it is hard to get Comodo to stick to the rules. It seems to re-block and re-sandbox things that I told it to allow, which is pretty frustrating. However, it does seem to err on the side of caution, so if you want to be safe but frustrated, it's the way to go.

    Hello, shmu26 (et al)...

In older times I used Comodo as firewall to Windows2000. So I'll talk about that experience as "info". [Of course, Win2K never came with a firewall, so setting one up for it was essential. I have heard that these days Windows Firewall is very good. Don't know for sure; haven't used it.]

Comodo had several sections for "configuration"...

    * There was a section where Comodo "learned" (by ticking "agreement") of programs you wanted to allow through the firewall;
    * there was a section where Comodo "learned" (by ticking "agreement" I think) of O/S components you wanted to allow through the firewall; and
    * there was a section where you could configure "rules" for IP's, PC's, Protocols, Ports. [In other words you could configure anything you wanted, any way you wanted. I liked this section because it worked at the port level. See, I liked tinkering at things my way (just like Techwiz said before.)]

So, what I did was turn OFF the learning parts of Comodo and just used the 3rd part (as described) and set up the dozen or so rules needed to run it securely my way. [After that, the choice to load INSECURE programs, or downloading INSECURELY, is a different "thing", and a personal choice.]

If I had to use Windows again (ie modern Windows) then I would look carefully at the Windows Firewall first, but - if I had to - I would put a fair bit of trust in Comodo Firewall based on my past good experience.

    Regards,
