My philosophy is if M$ call it an 'optional' update, I don't need it. :thumb:

I'm about 1 or 2 months behind in updates.
I wait a little longer since I don't trust Microsoft anymore. Who knows what other sneaking things they will do. :cautious: Look at the fiasco with KB3139929.
Why can't Microsoft leave us alone that want to keep Win 7/8? I paid for Win 7, like it, want to keep it until it's not supported anymore. (Knowing M$, Win 7/8 probably isn't supported now).

mantra, it's still sitting there. I'm awaiting for a GWX Control update based on this Statement:
If GWX Control is successful in doing the above, then I would install KB3139929. Keep in mind that my daily browser usage is done via Firefox, so I rarely use Internet Explorer.

It looks like everyone has their own plan in dealing with these updates, yet "waiting" seems the prominent course of action these days. :isay:
Lifecycle. Mainstream support ended in 2015 for the most part; Extended Support ends in 2020.

Is it worth downloading GWX Control if I have auto update switched off anyway? I'm just curious.

Yes, I do recommend downloading it, especially running it after installing any updates. You never know what has turned on behind the scene. :ninja:

PS. I haven't enabled its Monitoring feature; prefer not to do it.

    Earth .... occasionally
I also keep Win Updates switched off .... but I switch on GWX Control Panel before I do a manual check for updates ,
which is always at least two weeks after each Bork Tuesday.

If I see Updates that I might want , I enable " Monitor Mode" before the download , and leave it on for a few days after.
I keep a careful eye on what it's doing , but I haven't see any bad behavior going on.

AFAIK , the latest version of GWX Control Panel ( 1.7.2.0 ) does NOT block KB3139929 , which has absorbed / replaced KB3146449 ...
    ..... more detail here .
but I don't care because it only introduces "Nagware" into Internet Explorer ..... and I kicked out that particular filthy animal years ago :)

Performed my "Wait 10 Days from Patch Tuesday" update today, without KB3139929, on a Windows 7 system.

A new behavior occurred that took me by surprise...

BD's firewall notified s:\32characterGUID\setup.exe is attempting an outbound port 1673 TCP connection.

Glasswire reported it as "Setup Installer" published by Microsoft connecting to some.subdomains.akamaitech.net.

I allowed it and an in/out 1.3kb 165b exchange took place.

What's unusual is that S: is an external USB 1TB hard drive. It's used only for Cobian (v9 portable) daily scheduled document and email backups. (More extensive weekly backups go to a NAS via FTP.) There are no environment variables or system/file associations for that device. Cobian was not running during the update.

There was nothing left over from the install on S: so seems legit.

But I'm not liking that at all and from now on I'm going to remove the drive during updates. If I remember. :gack:

Sometimes Windows decides to extract updates to other partitions / external drives and is running the setup from there.
It's legit, but i don't like it too :cautious:

IMO you don't need 'GWX Control' on your system as long as KB3035583 is not installed. Simple as that. I have all updates installed including optional ones. I've never once seen anything regarding W10 on my system. Just hide the KB and your done. No need for any extra baggage.

OK thanks, I'm still pondering about GWX, but you're probably right about this.

Even if you have GWX, I think as long as you have group policy to disallow Windows 10 upgrade, WU update set to notify and unticked recommended updates as important, you're there.
GWX Control Panel is just an convenient way of controlling and monitoring this and other things.
On Win 8.1, I have that KB, but with GWX icon hidden till when I want / need it - if ever.
On Win 7, I have killed everything with GWX Control Panel.
    I use the portable version.

It's not a zipped file, just an .exe. I do have it in a GWX Control folder, under my Downloads main folder, and run it from there.
