USA still the best. But barely.
M$ will say w10 updates take priority over W7 machines.

You know that they've got to be putting 99.9% of their energy and work into W10, yes......

    That's MS's plan, right? ;)

I'm thinking of leaving Windows 10, but I don't know if I should go to 7.

Yesterday my computer crashed while using Blender (never happened before), and upon reboot I was presented with a Windows update message, saying that it was updating Windows. Funny enough, because I already disabled automatic updates, and the last time I checked for updates was a day prior to the crash.

Are updates working the same way they did on Windows 7? I mean, they won't be installed automatically.

@amarildojr There has been no change to how updates are delivered in Windows 7, so they you can configure Windows Update to not automatically install updates.

Why do you want to go back to Windows 7?

As far as I know, all you can do in W10 is defer updates. I haven't tried stopping them, so I don't know much more than that.

I like some aspects of W10 when I use it, but my overall impression of W10 is that there is way too much going on there, mostly behind the scenes. Try watching your disk activity sometime for several hours as you work with the machine. It's unbelievable. So, I can use W10 for a day or two for fun, but I just don't feel comfortable using it on a daily basis. IMO, nobody but MS actually really knows what W10 is doing behind the scenes.

W7 is great, but the slow updates issue is a huge pain in the *ss at times... I'm on W7 right now, and overall it's pretty nice. I use Ubuntu at times also, and it's pretty good overall.

Bottom line for me: every setup/OS has it's good and bad points. I don't think there IS any perfect setup... at least I've never found it. :)

    Thanks!

I feel dirty by using Windows 10. It's a good OS, I can't deny that, but I like to be in control of the system. It lost 80% of my trust with that automatic update thing, so I might be looking to revert to Windows 7. I don't know if I'll be able to use my 7 CDKEY again - I used it to activate Windows 10 (I think we talked about this over PM).

    I feel that way too.

You know, I feel exactly the same way! :O At first it was fine, but then after 2 or 3 days I literally started having nightmares about Windows 10, I kid you not.

Yes. However, it's only the first updates that bother me. I mean, 6 to 12 hours just to find them, that's one of the most ridiculous aspects of Windows there is IMO. But after it's fully updated, the updates roll in a normal timely manner.

That's exactly the way I feel :) In fact, I only came back to Windows because Linux wasn't working the way I wanted. Now, it's Windows too.

I'll probably sell my GPU and find a better processor, because with my current GPU I must use proprietary Catalyst in order to have proper GPU (OpenCL) acceleration on Blender (my work tool). So if I sell it I'll be able to do my 3D renderings with the processor and use the Free Mesa drivers :) I'll probably move back to Arch soon, if I decide not to use Windows 7 (because let's face it, the Home Basic edition, which is what I have, is preeety darn boring).

Regarding using your Win 7 key/serial after you upgrade, yes, you can use it, and Win 7 will still activate. I did the same thing, and when I reinstalled 7, it activated fine, no problems.

Cool! :D I will definitely try it.
The good thing about using Windows 7 is that now I have the time to wait for it to update, because after 10 years I finally found the courage to go finish my studies (I only have Elementary School done and I'm 24 years old). So I'll probably try it tomorrow, let it update, and then post the results, hopefully until the end of Sunday. I'll block the updates on >this thread<, allow all other updates to install, and hope for the best (Y).

No, but I guess it's a little too late for that. I'm seriously thinking about leaving Windows 10, and when I put something in my head it's nearly impossible to remove it.

Thanks for the link, though. It'll be useful if I decide to stick with 10.

Regarding nonsecurity-related KB3146449 that "adds functionality to Internet Explorer 11 on some computers that lets users learn about Windows 10 or start an upgrade to Windows 10", included with security update for Internet Explorer KB3139929, there's some news.

You may have noticed this article from The Register:
Microsoft adds 'non-security updates' to security patches
Recently, an update has been added:
Hmm.. this reply from Microsoft still does not say what exactly one should expect from KB3146449 "adds functionality to Internet Explorer 11 on some computers that lets users learn about Windows 10 or start an upgrade to Windows 10."
Replying without answering, we've seen that before from Microsoft.

And where Microsoft says, "Users that have turned off the GWX app or disabled notifications in settings will not see this recent change," yes, disabling GWX through Task Scheduler or through the Windows registry works, but "disabled notifications in settings", through Notification Area Icons Settings, that has no use, as that setting is discarded as soon as the user logs out and in or restarts the computer, Microsoft likes to ignore that, or so it seems.

What is interesting, that is that Microsoft states "nor will Windows Professional users" [see this recent change].
For everyone who tried to trigger any "adds functionality to Internet Explorer 11 on some computers that lets users learn about Windows 10 or start an upgrade to Windows 10" phenomenon, using a Windows 7 of 8 Professional system, that may have been the reason nothing showed up.

Well, I think we know a little bit more now, but as I said, Microsoft's reply still does not say what exactly one should expect from "adds functionality to Internet Explorer 11 on some computers that lets users learn about Windows 10 or start an upgrade to Windows 10."

[A spokeswoman for Microsoft has been in touch to say:

Since launching Windows 10, our number-one customer support request has been “how do I get my upgrade?”....]

    Total BS!

LOL .... yeah, who do they think they're kidding? If you're going to tell pork pies, at least try to make them believable (this means you Microsoft!). :argh:

I would think the #1 customer support question would be "How do I get this b.s. off my system!"... :)

    Agreed.
M$ knows there are millions of Windows users around the world who simply do not want Win 10, so now instead of an optional update they purposefully decided to obfuscate the Win 10 update inside a so called important security update for IE11.
Reminds me of Henry Ford with regard to the colour of his cars - 'You can have any system you like - as long as it's Windows 10 !' ;)
