your dl speeds are about the same. Mbps = Megabits per second.
but i don't think it's about connection speed either. i believe it's something to do w/ the way ms distributes the updates for win 8/8.1/10.

@BoerenkoolMetWorst I think you're right about CPU power.
@imdb Yes, connection speed seems to have little to do with it.

Oh yeah, I misread his post. I thought he said 10 MB/s. My bad.

I found a trick to speed up the initial fresh install update time, but then after the first check and updates, it's back to it's longer behavior (took 2 hours just the other day to check for updates). So you basically can't win. I did notice during this long update checking time that my cpu usage is 50-60%, coming from svchost. I haven't been able to figure out what's going on really, but I watched this slow update behavior develop over time and get worse about a year or two ago. It started off taking more time to check, but still only around 10 minutes or so, then it was 15, and then later it was 30 and then hours. This is on a fresh install, which I did many times over the past few years. So who knows. I think it has something to do with the sheer number of updates involved, and with a bug somewhere in MS's updating system. They have released updates which pretend to fix it, but it still isn't fixed based on my current experience and those of many others as well.

As for cpu power, mine is a 6 year old core 2 duo, so yes, that could be an issue also.

Nothing to do with cpu ... it also takes a long time on modern systems. It's just general dev suck.

@Kerodo My CPU usage is high at the beginning, but then it goes to 0% and I see a ton of errors at the file "C:\Windows\Windows Update". But then, magically after several hours, if find the updates.

The part I hate about it is that even after I install and fully update Win 7, and everything is fine, then the next month (just a few days ago), it still takes freaking 2+ hours to do the update check. That is crap.... I am tempted to start in with Linux again, but right now 7 is otherwise running great, and all is well. So I'll probably stick with it for a while..

Interesting. For me, I don't remember it taking 2 hours to find updates after the OS is up-to-date. Maybe things have changed to the worse, Microsoft is pushing Windows 10 at all costs, even if it means borking Windows 7 updates.

It is pretty ridiculous when you think about it. 2 hours... lol. I'm sure they could easily fix this issue, but of course they don't want to. Another way to push people to 10. Linux gets more attractive every day... ;)

I have a Windows 7 32 bit VM... It hadn't updated since July of last year. I just thought Windows Updates was broken on it. So I let it run until it finished. 3 days later, it came back with 127 updates.

They've released prior updates which claim to fix it, but don't. I doubt they will fix it. They probably want everyone to get fed up and move to Win 10...

For all we know, no. I installed Windows 10 3 times and all updates worked fine, it takes literally just a few seconds to find them.

No, no such issues at all in both Win 10 and Win 8.1, I can confirm this from experience with both. However, this issue is affecting Win 7 and Vista users.

@daman1 It affects Vista too. However, if you let Windows Update keep running it will find update in time.

@daman1 Have a look at this post. You can speed up the time it takes to search for updates, by installing the lastest Windows Update Agent, and installing KB3102810.
