    Help me reach my goal: Record not only games, but the desktop too, and be able to switch from the game to the desktop (with Alt-TAB) without stopping the recording process.

    I use a software called "MSI Afterburner", but for all I know it can only record the game output, not the desktop. I've seen other programs recording everything, but their performance wasn't good at all.

    So the program must be Free of charge and be able to record everything that I see on my monitor.

    Thanks.

    You can try bandicam and ocam. I'm not exactly sure about their alt tab behavior, though.

    I have SmartPixel Pro from a giveaway, there is a free version. Not sure how limited it is though.

    And I have heard good things about Fraps, but the free edition looks quite limited.

    I'm currently looking at OBS. I've used it on Linux, let's see if it works on Windows.

    I usually recommend:
    * Camtasia
    * Fraps
    * BandiCam
    * Mirillis Action!
    * Dxtory

    Free:
    * VClip

    Because I used them a lot of in the past for my AV reviews on YouTube. If you not need to re-edit them Camtasia is the way to go, but if you do a lot of post productions then Fraps/Mirillis Action is good because you can also import the Projects in Vegas Studio and other professional programs.

    I think I have tried most of them, and I prefer Active Presenter by Atomi. If you want high quality video in a small file size then I would give Active Presenter a try. I think the free version will do everything you need, and a whole lot more. I use the free version myself, and I don't think I will ever need anything else. I really can't speak highly enough about this software. I'm really grateful they have a free version without any nagware. http://atomisystems.com/
