MSE ( KB3140527 )

Don't want to cry wolf but maybe something in this ? ........There are some posts regarding MSE ( KB3140527 ) - showing up in Windows Update - upgrading MSE to v4.9.218.0

UH-OH! Woody, tell fellow reader RD to REMOVE/UNINSTALL Microsoft Security Essentials v4.9.218.0 [KB3140527] IMMEDIATELY! This new version of MSE is causing major problems on Vista/Win7 computers as noted in this MS forums page, and possibly rendering MSE program ununsable. Revert back to the previous version (4.8.204.0) by using System Restore or use the older version of the MSE installer to install the older version.

AVOID INSTALLING Microsoft Security Essentials version 4.9.218.0, folks! v4.9.218.0 of MSE is NOT yet available as a standalone download from the MSE web site and still offers the more stable v4.8.204.0.

Well this "important" update has been a major issue for MSE users running Windows Vista, both 32-bit and 64-bit, preventing them from logging on normally:

No problem here with 4.9.218.0 on Win 7 64. It installed in less than a minute and didn't ask for a reboot. It passed the tests at AMTSO including the spyware and drive-by tests.

 

Yeah, I plan to upgrade as soon as 7.1 is released. Meanwhile, MSE 4.8.204.0 passes every test at AMTSO except phishing. I suspect it was actually your browser that passed that one. At the bottom of the phishing test page is a comment saying Windows Defender failed on February 5. Windows Defender got its 4.9 update about 3 months ago. Either Microsoft didn't test MSE 4.9 on Vista or they are being very mean to those of us who bought their PCs ~ Removed Off Topic Remarks ~. Some trusting souls still allow updates to install automatically (but not me of course).

 

I'm surprised Vista even received that update, I wouldn't have thought it would fall under the extended support category.

 

I'm not sure why you are surprised, considering that mainstream support for Windows 7 has also ended. The only surprising thing is that some Windows 10 users who upgraded from Windows 7 and formerly used MSE have also received the update, much to their dismay. Oh, I should've said "before July 2009" in my previous post and regret going off topic.

 

No problem here either with 4.9.218.0 Win 7 64bit. Matter of fact it's working better here than 4.8.204.0 did of which I had some memory problems.
