I thought that it would happen eventually. I miss the old days of Opera.

So this will be the definite dead of Opera. They already ruined the browser by killing Opera Presto, and I will never touch it again once Qihoo get their hands on it. There's nothing left to say but: RIP Opera.

I too will say Good Bye to Opera. What a pity: it was a very good browser, but it developers took the wrong path.

    RIP Opera, indeed.

Vivaldi is already installed and configured. Just waiting for a newer beta (not snapshot) build.

I haven't tried Vivaldi yet, I need to do that. I've never been impressed with Qihoo products, so I don't see myself following what Opera gets turned into. It's a shame, but I agree that the company went in the wrong direction.

I guess I'm in the minority who don't think that the switch to Chromium/Blink was bad in and of itself. After all, it is just the rendering engine, a good one at that. It's what built around that engine that matters more in my opinion. Sadly this is where Opera failed miserably. So it's not the decision to switch engines that bothers me, it's the decision to create a generic browser and the further decisions to keep changing established features (like removing the Closed tabs menu) that annoy me to no end.

Opera being bought out invokes a "meh" reaction from me. One one hand things can always get worse so there is that. On the other hand however, considering the current state of the Opera browser, what are the odds that it will get worse, how much worse can it get?

Oh well, I've already made my decisions to switch to Vivaldi months ago. I'm just waiting for them to add the ability to open the bookmarks inside folders on the Bookmark Bar in a new tab with the middle mouse button which it is still missing for some reason. Once this feature is implemented I'm abandoning Opera completely.
It's a strange feeling of déjà vu here however, me waiting for a specific feature to switch browsers. It's the same as when I waited for the new Opera to get its own bookmark manager.

I have not used Opera for years, so how this will affect Opera is of no interest to me. However, since I use Qihoo's browser 360 Extreme Explorer (and no doubt will be for a long time) I will be interested to see how this affects the development of it.

I would give it a chance. I don't care that behind this buyout is Chinese consortium, why not? Can we say that Volvo is bad just only because it's owned by Chinese financial group? Definitely not. Chinese entrepreneurs have enough resources to help Opera take a bigger slice of the browsers share. I recommend to read this article respectively its discussion where Opera staff explains how it will work, they will still manage it from Norway with offices in Poland etc., privacy issues will be handled as per Opera standards etc. So before we make any hasty decisions let's wait and see how it goes and only then make a conclusion.

I said it about the new Opera - not about it's new business - see the post n. 11 of Night_Raven here, I agree.

I don't know the details of the proposed transaction. But I seriously doubt there is much concern at all for the desktop browser. Even though it is/was a popular desktop browser among the techie crowd, it had a minuscule following overall. I suspect the Opera mobile browser is the real product in the proposed deal.

  16. Second that. Opera was the safest browser in XP times, it probably is still the best choice for people still running XP. Opera mobile what a brilliant move to do part of the rendering on the server side in times mobile bandwidth was low and mobile CPU and GPU were weak.

I think it's kinda sad that within months Vivaldi was already a better browser, that says it all.
