http://i.imgur.com/MLVvFCc.png I have an external drive set up on my network. It contains a few folders to organize files by user. The drive contains folders "$RECYCLE.BIN", "cache", and "System Volume Information". I have been trying for months to get rid of these folders. I know these folders have important uses, but I do not want to see them at all! I have tried to mark the folders "Hidden", but any change I do does not save. I am not sure if it is the folder that is rejecting the properties change, or the external HDD will not allow it. I really would like to fix this, can anybody please help?
You'll be able to delete them with IObit Unlocker. Install it, then right click on the folders in Explorer, select IObit Unlocker, and then when it opens select Unlock & Delete.
@jadinolf Some IObit software will install other software from IObit (e.g. Advanced SystemCare) unless you uncheck it. However, I installed Unlocker again before doing my original post here, and it did not want to install any extras.
I just scanner the actual unlocker exe file as well as two different installers for it at VirusTotal, and in all three cases only Dr. Web detects it.
you cant delete these folders, they will be re-created each time you use your drive at windows - recycler any time you delete files. gambling around with rights also wont help. you can turn off system restore for this drive in windows settings. the only option for hiding is to turn on again in explorer options hide system and hidden files. dont mind and forget.
"show hidden system files" in explorer options is for all drives same. "System Volume Information" is created at any time when windows has access, regardless system restore is used on that drive or not.
@jadinolf You should be be able to delete the windows.old folder just by using Disk Cleanup. Go to start menu, and type in cleanmgr. Disk Cleanup will be shown in the list of results. Right click on it and select Run as administrator - as you can clean more data when running it as an Administrator.
I know but sometimes I can't delete it- even in safe mode (Windows 10) so I thought this would be a handy program to add to my quiver.
"Hide protected operating system files" is already enabled. These folders are not affected by this setting. No, I do not.
