Will check it out. I downloaded an older versions months ago, but didn't feel like installing it. But apparently it's portable, pretty cool.

Yes, it falls under the definition of "portable" I believe. I use it. It doesn't need any installation. Just makes a C:\EEK directory and you run from there. You can ditch the directory when done, or leave it alone and next run it'll suggest updating the huge amount of signatures from both engines.

    You're welcome @quietman :)
It's really good and truly portable AV scanner and I use it for weekly scan. I like it so much that last year I even bought an EAM licence to support company.
Only thing that IMO needs improvement is EEK update speed.

@Minimalist did you check the update speeds of the new version 11? It should be significantly faster than the previous one as it now makes use of parallel downloads from our CDN.

Yes, you're right, update speed was great when first run. I didn't know if that is improvement in new version or just smaller update size. I will wait for a week so I will get similar update size as usually and could compare speed to previous version.
Great work with latest release :thumb: I will continue to support you although I don't use your real-time protection.

I'm thinking you might want some one else to post up about that, too. ;) I've been using EEK for years.

The post extract first run update was pretty swift. It remains to be seen what that will be in 3-4 weeks when I run it again. But anything will be better than the 30-40 minutes v10 and earlier versions took on my Intel i7 box and 50Mbps broadband. Not that this was an issue for a superb free product. I'd just start the update and return to it later. After a TV show or something.

    @ emsisoft
I have two folders, bin32 and bin64, each with complete sets of components and each fully stuffed with Emsisoft and Bitdefender sigs/defs. Is this by design? (And I understand why that might be: system-to-system portability.)

For use locally and exclusively on one system can the appropriate bin file be deleted? If so, will it be returned at the next update?

    Thank you.

    It's always been portable.

@haakon yes that's by design as you may want to run the scanner on a platform that's different to your own used one. When performing an online update, both editions are updated, so you can simply copy the whole package to an USB stick to scan any third party computer, no matter if 32 or 64 bit.

The extra download size is marginal, as the signatures are mostly identical and well compressable with solid compression. Online updates always only download the differential data and rarely any full files.

I've just tested it (deleted bin32 folder). At first update from bin64 it got re-downloaded and recreated.

    .... my edit above ....

That is incredible haakon , there must surely be another issue with your system .

It takes 3 minutes MAX here , on an i5 system .... same as it always did.

Has anyone else seen this take so long ?

That's what I meant by system-to-system portability. BTW, I inquired about that out of curiosity, not in any way critical of features or functions. Thanks for the fast reply. And for EEK. :thumb:

I read that before posting up my questions.
    Thanks for testing!

No. Posts at the Emsisoft forum (some of them my own) will back me up on that. I generally use EEK monthly, or longer, by which time there would be, for BD sigs/defs alone, 100's of those little files. I sniffed/logged the packets, too.

As well, with two decades of hands-on support (Windows, Unix, Novell) in enterprises large and small, my Windows 7 system rocks issue-free.

    Oh, and Commodore. :D

I can confirm that a few users had significant speed problems lately. So far we couldn't entirely figure what was the reason but we have implemented a number of ideas to speed up updates in general (multiple download channels, http connection re-using, etc). These may or may not affect those users but from the feedback we've received so far, it looks pretty good. :)

@haakon you could test it by deleting e.g. the bin32 folder when running the software on x64. Then run an online update and check how long it takes to re-download the full ~200 mb files.

EDIT: Nice reading... the article about Ransomware and Emsisoft Decryptor... cute!

USA still the best. But barely.
I renamed the root folder & the shortcut Emsisoft Emergency Kit 11.0.0.6082. Thought I might forget what EEK is.

    @emsisoft
I have one question about restarting EEK after update. After EEK components have been updated I get two popups, one saying I need to restart EEK and another saying I need to restart computer:
    upload_2016-1-24_8-40-11.png

If I select Yes on message 1 EEK restarts and I can use EEK normally. If I click on Restart computer on message 2, system restarts and EEK can be used normally also. So my question is: since EEK is portable scanner is it necessary to restart whole system or is restarting EEK enough to update all components?

Hi, when I update EEK 11, I find that in most cases it has only one network connection (i.e., not parallel), as shown in the following screenshot:
    https://i.imgur.com/h26I5hk.png

Only in a few cases it will have multiple network connections:

    Would this be normal?

Curiously, last night at 11:56 pm, I was testing this portable for the very first time and it never was able to download any signature. It said something about servers, can't recall correctly.
Now I run this EEK once again and updated easily, not that fast as you claim though.

@Online_Sword the first connection is to our main server that provides the listing for the files to download. Once that is loaded and parsed, it can continue with the downloads. The second screenshot shows the actual downloads from our CDN that use up to 5 simultaneous transfer channels.

IIRC EEK before never asked for a computer restart when updating core components although
version 10 does update with same 2 popups. I liked it before when EEK asked to be restarted
to load updated modules rather than having to reboot computer. Restart computer didn't
work on version 10 and froze my computer screen.

NOTE: Version 11 does not work on older Windows OSs. Needs Windows 7 and above.
