Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) What's really new ? Will it be more viable as an alternative to windows 10 ? rrrh1(arch1)
@amarildojr: Please, stop posting this kind of cheap short comment just to up your post-count, it's getting ridiculous. You're only spreading FUD and misinformation, and furthermore you're doing so in answer to someone apparently coming from Win-world honestly seeking quality information, precision and nuance. Thank you.
More viable in what regard? Security? Privacy? Stability? Ease of use? Quickness? Compatibly, and if so, compatibility to what? Are you seeking comparison to Win10 only, or have you already tried Linux distro(s) in the past (maybe previous ubuntus) and want to compare upcoming version to previous one?
I don't care about post count. My comment is honest as always, IMO Ubuntu isn't quite the alternative to Windows yet, because the vast majority of users don't know that they're being spied on (be it on Windows or Ubuntu). 8 between 10 of my friends that use Ubuntu didn't know their local searches were being sent to Canonical, Amazon, and who knows. Most disabled the spying feature, some moved elsewhere.
Like "don't talk about it anymore"? No way. We all have freedom of speech, it doesn't matter if we like what's being said or not.
This is a technical forum. Your political opinions are irrelevant and are tantamount to trolling. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_(operating_system)#Amazon_controversy
I assume the same can be said about the threads on how to lock Firefox or Windows? Because the "political views" of those who don't want to be spied are irrelevant? This thread in question only asked if Ubuntu is a viable alternative to Windows 10, without saying exactly WHERE Ubuntu would have to meet Windows 10. I only commented about both spying on the users, there's nothing political on that. I already commented about how Canonical should warn the users and ask for their permission to collect data.
You can bandy semantics as much as you like. You are effectively trolling because of your political viewpoint.
If you can't figure this out, I can't help you. It appears that I'm not the only person who has noticed your apparent need to troll anyone who mentions the Ubuntu OS. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_(operating_system)#Amazon_controversy
No one here said you don't have freedom of speech. It's just annoying to read the same old rhetoric. We understand your opinion and respect it, you tell us every opportunity you get. Now it would be great if you kept that opinion in the privacy forum instead of this one, where it is more appropriate.
This is a UNIX forum, right? And we're talking about Ubuntu, right? I only shared my opinion that Ubuntu will become a better alternative when data sharing becomes opt-in. Isn't this what this thread is about? Sharing opinions on this very subject? I really don't understand all the fuss. Sure, I've said this same thing many many many times, but I'll keep saying it, because since Ubuntu is the "first door" for many people when it comes to Linux, it's important that this "first door" doesn't have some of Windows' unethical practices. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Ubuntu. Making it a better system is one thing I have in mind, and I try to do that by being this annoying person who complains (rightfully) about the spyware, because if enough people also complain about it to Canonical, guess what? They'll probably remove it, thus making Ubuntu an OS which is a better alternative in terms or privacy. It all connects. And since I can't program yet, this is me getting a shot at making it better, like people or not.
This is a subjective political opinion. This ostensibly is not a political thread. You just aren't getting this.
You either don't understand what a subjective political opinion is, or how it is neither appropriate or apposite for this thread, or you are just trolling.
I don't understand why it's not appropriate for this thread. It's my opinion of how Ubuntu could be a better alternative for Windows 10. It's completely related to the thread, regardless of being a political or technical opinion. And I don't think it's political. If it is, then I also don't see why it wouldn't be appropriate as OP never specified the origin of the "opinion". After all, opinion is opinion (it's subjective no matter the origin), and it can also englobe technical issues like data leaks, personal information leaks, possible IP adress misuse, and user privacy violations.
Here is an article I was reading today while wondering the same thing: http://news.softpedia.com/news/ubun...lease-in-years-here-s-what-s-new-498787.shtml
Thanks. I like how they're planning to move to another software center and updated their own after a few years. Although I liked the style of their software center, it didn't seem to get improved over the years. New boot splash is a nice feature too, it'll definitely make the OS look younger. Let's see if Debian catches on. This is AWESOME NEWS (so far): "Ubuntu 16.04 (Xenial Xerus) is also dropping the online search for Unity 7, which will be turned off by default. It’s been a long time coming, and it’s been requested by users for many years." Finally! "The Ubuntu devs are planning on shipping the ZFS file system in the repositories so that it’s available for the 16.04 LTS release. It’s almost done, and it’s probably going to be ready in time for the launch" Good, more people to test it. Right now it's pretty poor on performance. "Another cool option that should land along with the GNOME Software should allow users to upgrade their firmware (think BIOS) straight from the OS. This has been in the making for GNOME for some time, and it will land in Ubuntu as is" What feature is that?
I know. It's not a technical opinion though, but merely your subjective political opinion. The comparative adjective 'better' is relative here, only you fail to see why it is a relative and essentially subjective viewpoint. "Only if the spyware becomes Opt-IN rather then opt-out." Referring to the shopping lens as 'spyware' is inflammatory and a subjective term regardless of your own personal politics or political subjectivity and/or allegiances. As spyware can be defined in a plethora of terms it is FUD to refer to the Ubuntu shopping lens and the corresponding Amazon connection in such terms. This isn't a simple binary oppositional argument with a simplistic morality. This is basically sophistry and as such essentially irrelevant.
Thanks. I could understand it if Canonical had done something unforgivably awful. It's still a good distro.
So it would be OK if I was annoying about a "political view" that fits what you consider to be "unforgivably awful"?
