Hi, after 7 years or so of a dual core computer I think it's time to move on a get a new one.

    My actual system:

    Intel Pentium E5200 @ 2.50GHz
    RAM 4.00GB Dual-Channel DDR2 @ 399MHz
    Motherboard Gigabyte P31-ES3G
Graphics - 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT (Gigabyte)

Right now my eyes are on those two:

    DELL Precision T1700, Intel Xeon E3-1241 v3 - 3.9Ghz, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, nVIDIA Quadro K420 1GB.

    or

    DELL Inspiron 3847, Intel Core i7-4790 - 4.0GHz, 16GB, 2TB HDD, nVIDIA GeForce GT 705 2GB

Both are about 1000 Euros and that's not a problem. The problem is which to get since my daily tasks are 4-6 hours / day of Photoshop, browsing heavily with 5-10 tabs opened in Chrome/Firefox , rarely watching a YouTube video...and so on; no gaming involved.

From what I can tell I know that both are great except for the graphics card. The HDD is also not something to consider since to me 1 tb or 2 tb are the same, I don't have so many files now nor in the future.

So, for the next five years / seven years which one would you get and more important why? Thank you.

Is choosing the parts and build (or have the shop build) it an option?

Why not build it yourself? I plan on building a Xeon rig here pretty soon

I can't tell where you live, but I've purchased 2 PC's in the past year from eCollegePC and I couldn't be happier. You can essentially build what you want and pick and choose your parts, but they build it for you. http://www.ecollegepc.com

    Good customer service as well.

DELL Inspiron 3847. Slightly faster cpu, double the ram, double the hdd. I second Infected's recommendation of an SSD. They make a HUGE difference.

    Paul,

I favour the Inspiron too. After it arrives, check how much "data" is in the OS partition. Buy an SSD and transfer the relevant OS UEFI folders to the SSD. Use the old HD as an internal data/backup drive.

Yup, having a SSD for the OS can breath newish life into even an old PC so if you're going get a new PC, be sure to use a SSD!

If you are into Photoshop, despite it's 1 gig memory, that Quadro 420 puts the GT 705 to shame.

    PassMark - G3D Mark

    Quadro K420=837

    GeForce GT 705=414

Will the DELL Precision T1700 take more RAM? Ram is cheap.

Frankly, I think for the price you can do better than either of those.

Take a browse through Amazon or if you are in USA NewEgg. I see superior rigs for that price target.
