Since I am new to the "tablet" world, I am wondering if I need a screen protector for my Kindle Fire and iPad Air.

There is no agreement about the need as I have seen by googling the question..
Has anyone ever scratched a screen? I understand the are made of gorilla glass.(whatever that is) and are tough enough that the screen will not scratch under normal use.
Some are not cheap, and I don't want to waste money on improbable happenings.

    Opinions?
    Thanks,
    Jerry

I would say you don't need a screen guard. I bought an android tablet (dell venue 8 2013 model) about 1.5 years ago. I thought about that too, and I was anxious about it as my tablet doesn't have a gorilla glass or anything similar, it is an ordinary screen. However I can say after 1.5 years, there are still no scratches, or visible marks on the screen. I have also noticed it looks much better without a screen guard. I have seen phones/tablets with poor quality screen guards which actually makes the screen looks different.

Just keep a lens cleaner solution or something like that handy along with a microfiber cloth and clean the screen according to your usage. Use a pouch/sleeve to put the tablet into, and I don't think it will scratch anytime soon.

That is what I have been doing. Thanks.

If you don't want to use a pouch/sleeve then a screen protector is a good idea, especially the glass ones IMHO - saved my phone screen from a facedown drop (the glass protector too the impact and shattered, saving my screen below).
