"Microsoft has announced that users have just five weeks to upgrade before security patches for Internet Explorer dries up.

After January 12 there will be no more patches to protect against drive-by downloads and other browser vulnerabilities.

This will leave millions vulnerable considering that every month Internet Explorer is the target of hackers. As many as 124 million users are running IE 10 or earlier. Most users are still running IE9, indicating the systems are running Win7.

Microsoft told users in mid-2014 that IE 11 will be the final version. In that Internet Explorer was the target of many hacks, Microsoft called it quits and introduced Microsoft Edge in Win10. Microsoft has said the browser is safer as it prevents adware and toolbars from hijacking dynamic link libraries". http://www.zdnet.com/article/millio...face-patch-security-showdown/?linkId=19323240

So if I read this correctly, only IE11 will be updated after January 12?

    Per Microsoft:

Internet Explorer 11 is the last version of Internet Explorer, and will continue to receive security updates, compatibility fixes, and technical support on Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10.

    Yes, as it says here:
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/WindowsForBusiness/End-of-IE-support
But on that page there's also the link to:
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle#gp/Microsoft-Internet-Explorer
which points out what I mentioned here:
    Yes, that's right.

I can't remember the last time I've seen a toolbar on IE, but I also can't remember the last PC with IE as the default browser.

Although I have IE11 installed it's never used and to be honest it's no great loss.

No matter if one does or doesn't use IE11, there is no loss, as IE11 will still be supported.

Would have been nice if they finished it first. I think it has potential, but they need to get the addons going.

    True.
Maybe microsoft will find some way of integrating mozilla add-ons into their browser at some point.

I already dumped IE back in 2003, after that I dumped it again in 2006 when I was still using Maxthon. :D

Misleading title, it's IE10 and below. IE11 is going to be supported till 2020.

Misinformation, as not only IE11, but only "the most current version of Internet Explorer available for a supported operating system" will receive technical supports and security updates, according to Microsoft.
And yes, for Windows 7 and 8.1 that is IE11,
but for Vista that is IE9,
for various Windows Server that is IE11 or IE10,
and on various Windows Embedded it is IE11, IE10, IE8 or even IE7(!)

I think basically Microsoft is to blame for the misinformation, as Microsoft's original article was oversimplified, and open for misunderstanding, and to make matters worse, most editors don't seem to read the Windows lifecycle FAQ sheet to learn more.

Not much I can guarantee but I can guarantee I will never use Edge on any machine I personally own. I seldom use IE now and after recently seeing Edge on a Win 10 machine, my answer is no, no, no!

I recently purchase several Windows 7 Pro 64 bit Licenses. Am I affected once I upgrade to Windows 7 Pro 64 bit?

What exactly do you mean, "affected"?
As mentioned, beginning January 12, 2016, only the most current version of Internet Explorer available for a supported Windows version will receive technical support and security updates.
For Windows 7, that is IE11.
If on Windows 7 you want to use IE11, you are not affected.
However, if you want to use a previous IE version on Windows 7, that won't be supported and won't get security updates.

Ok with me. Haven't used IExplorer in years. Have it turned off, unticked in "Windows features on and off".
