I am a complete lummock with linux, just use if for my Wife to keep her out of trouble, so please bear with me.

I did have Ubuntu on this m/c but decided to install Mint instead. I copied all the relative stuff onto a stick including .thunderbird. I was hoping I could just copy this over to the new tbird folder using Krusader that allows root access. Although I copied it over, tbird does not recognise the profile and insists on creating a new one.

After some searching I came across a command for the profile manager (thunderbird -profilemanager). This only allows Create, Rename or Delete. I cannot see how to get the old profile recognised.

    Any suggestions please.

Copy the contents of the folder you saved (see snapshot)
open the Tbird folder on Linux (Tbird options button, Help, Troubleshooting Information, Show Folder),
    close Thunderbird,
paste the copied contents over the existing ones,
    close folder and open Thunderbird.

Thanks - but you are showing a windows example. Tried deleting the contents of the .thunderbird folder and paste in my one but Tbird does not see it, just creates another blank one.

I just went through the trouble of reproducing the situation and it works. This was windows 7 to Ubuntu 15.10 and it should work with Mint as well or whatever distro because Tbird is Tbird.
The steps work with FF as well.

Don't be creative and just follow the steps:
Copy the contents of the folder you saved (see snapshot)
open the Tbird folder on Linux (Tbird options button, Help, Troubleshooting Information, Show Folder),
    close Thunderbird,
paste the copied contents over the existing ones,
    close folder(s) and open Thunderbird.
