You can't install applications in Locked Down Mode. AppGuard will allow Windows to update in Locked Down Mode though just so you know. You have to lower the protection mode to Install Mode, or Off to install applications. AppGuard will allow signed installers to run in Medium Protection Mode with limited rights, but it is not meant to be used for installations.

So I have to put mode to Install Mode then back to Locked Down Mode every time I install a new app or game?

Yes. AppGuard basically blocks everything that is not already installed on your computer. That is a very rudimentary description of how AG works anyways. AppGuard does not rely on any blacklisting since it's impossible to identify the hundreds of thousands of new malware that may exist on any given day. AppGuard will allow signed files to run in Medium Protection Mode with limited rights though. It's the same as running something sandboxed.

I always update Chrome and Firefox in medium mode. Flash too can be updated in that mode.
    Then back to locked down.

Change the protection level to Install and follow the instructions in the help file: -

Install: Use this level when installing or updating software. If you are updating a Guarded application, you may also need to UnGuard the application. If your installation requires a reboot, uncheck the "Re-enable" checkbox. In that case AppGuard will not re-enable the protections until the user reinstates the Protection Level. If the "Re-enable" checkbox is checked, AppGuard will automatically re-enable AppGuard after the timeout has expired.

That's true. I forgot to mention that some applications on the trusted publishers list will be allowed to update in Medium Mode. Firefox, Adobe Flash, Adobe Reader, etc.. can update in Medium Mode since they are on the trusted publishers list. I no longer use Adobe Reader though. You can add additional trusted publishers, but they may not necessarily be allowed to update. I have trusted publishers on my list that still can not update. It's safer to switch to install mode, or off for many other applications updates.
