Take the time to set/apply templates/defaults on what you want to mask rather than disabling it completely (which will undermine it completely if you think about it--once an app has your info, it's done).

I also just installed the Avast 5.0 beta. What do you think about it? I like the new UI. I was hoping the call blocking feature would work, but unfortunately I can't enable it on Android 5.0

Edit: I was able to enable call blocking after restarting the phone - haven't tested it yet though.

I just started to use Bitdefender Mobile Security and sometimes use 360 Mobile Security.

I will probably install Dr. Web Light, too. What are your opinions? Is it a good free av for mobiles? I couldn't find any up-to-date reviews. The ones I have read were written sometime in 2012.

Advanced Permission Manager (Remove App permissions and other cool stuffs)
APK Editor Pro (Edit Apps and remove some nasty stuffs from them, Use it as App backup)
Microphone Block and Camera Block (Block camera and microphone access)
    Protonmail client (End-to-End encrypted emails)
ARP Guard (Protect from ARP spoofing attacks)
    A very good VPN client
FakeGPS (If any app resist to open without GPS enabled)
    Tresorit (End-to-End encrypted file storage)
    Telegram (End-to-End encrypted IM)
Network Connections (For Network analysis specially on VPN as my device is not rooted)
Hacker's Keyboard (For its easy to use and privacy concerns)
NoTelUrl (Protect against the USSD vulnerability)

Just Adguard for adblocking.. I don't root my phone or install apps from unknown sources except Adguard. So I don't really need an AV.

It seems to be quite effective, as effective as version 4 was. They say that more features will be added soon.

Avast is abandoning its firewall. Terrible decision IMO. It's been working well for me over 2 years on a rooted tablet.
    See Replies #2 and #4 here: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=178293.0

Good alternatives are NoRoot firewall + Sophos or DrWeb AV + MBAM which work fine on a Moto phone. And Maxthton browser has a decent ad blocker.

The device has to be rooted for the firewall to work and that's the problem. The vast majority of carrier controlled phones, etc, are not rooted and can't be rooted by the average user.

Note that some people in the Avast thread are also saying that Anti-Theft has also been removed and that's not the case. Anti-Theft is still installed and available in the v5.0 UI.

I took a look at this - I didn't install it, but it got me thinking: how does one guard their privacy when their device is connected to a public wifi network? Say for instance at an apartment where wifi is provided to the tenants? (without vpn)

I know that with windows one would disable file/folder-sharing, and run a firewall (amongst other things?) in the effort to remain secure on a public network. I'm not sure of the equivalent or comparable measures one would take on android (does an android firewall provide similar guards against intrusion?).

Would like some thoughts on this and/or some links to further reading
    thanks *puppy*

I think a VPN client will help in that situation, but my device is not rooted so I can't use noroot firewall while I am on the VPN session.
Also I think ARP Guard will give another layer of security even if the device is not rooted, and about firewalls I think it may help but I am not sure if it works at the same level of windows firewalls (I know it uses a VPN tunnel to control connection flow) .. maybe root firewall works better than noroot firewall ? I don't know .

I wouldn't recommend any CM products. The rest of the named products seem to be trustworthy (altough I also dislike avira + comodo).

Take a look at this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/guide-little-guide-to-security-privacy-t3042460

VPN or SSH-Tunnelig is what you are looking for :) Other than that you can run a firewall and block incoming requests that you don't like (or just allow what you know and block the rest).

Altough I use Telegram myself, it doesn't seem to be a good choice :/
