After experimenting with AX64TM I have found that most of the time it presents no problems IF I don't defrag C: and if all BU's are in same folder on D:

BUT I did have an experience on a laptop that took some efforts to restore. Here is what happened.

I had installed Win7 on a laptop, I used AX64 V1 (Like it better than V2) to BU Laptop, to D: BU WIN7 and a few months later I wanted to upgrade to Win10.

Well I am running Win10 on my PC and had used DriverBooster to update some drivers and it worked without even a hiccup. (usually am wary of these, but my PC is much faster now.

But when I tried the same thing on my laptop I had some driver problems and I could not use sysprep on the laptop because Win10 had gone over the top of Win7.

Well When I tried to use the BU of Win7 made by AX64, it gave me a 0900 error.

So I installed Win 7 using the Win7 disk, and did a clean install, took 15 minutes, then I installed AX64, then when I opened AX64 it asks what drive I want to BU I chose C: Then it asks where to save, I chose D:BU Win 7.

Now I close AX64 and reopen it and choose view BU's recover files or entire system, and click OK and sure enough it restored my BU of Windows 7

    Hi Rodneym,

    Thanks for sharing your report.

The latest version coming will resolve this Win 10 compatibility issue.

    Thanks!

    Regards

    Waj

Right now my desktop PC is running Win10 64bit. I have installed all my fav software (but no Antivirus, this way I can try out many AVs without having to uninstall).

First BU with AX64TM takes 3 minutes, after that maybe 30 seconds or less, same for restores.

So I make a folder on another internal harddrive I name is Base Plus Fav, so it becomes D: Base Plus Fav.

Now I make a BU with Acronis (off USB), and then made a BU with AX64TM. This is my "Base BU". All the BU's go to same folder in D:

Then I installed Avast, then ran another BU with AX64TM.

    Now the test.

I restore the "Base" BU without AV, and it works great... In 25 seconds it reboots and I'm back at my base BU...

Now I install Bullguard Antivirus, then run another BU with AX64TM.

This time I test and see if I can go to the BU that contains "Avast"...Presto, works great, AX64 runs a restore for about 20 seconds, reboots, and I'm back running Avast.

Working on windows 10 too... I hope the new version ATX64TM is very good, but IF it is not, I'll go with V1 that I'm using now.

Question for you guys... I heard the original developers of AX64TM, sold the rights to the product to another developer. I also heard the new developers were struggling to finish the product... Is this just hearsay or is it true. IF it is true possibly the old team or some other brilliant programmer could help them out... This really is a great product, and I know many people were very excited about it, hate to see it fall thru the cracks, especially if this new version coming out struggles also.

I wish them (whoever owns AX64TM) the best, and hope this turns out good for them...

Its not clear exactly what happened (was it sold, did they merge, etc) but the original developer (but not nec the original team) is working with the new team.

So what's the deal. Real Copy or The New AX64TM, which one should we purchase or are they the same thing. And will they both arrive at the same time, end of October right?

Well unless the end of this month brings some real good news concerning a new AX64 or Real Copy or whatever....I'll be using my V1 of AX64TM...And as I stated above, with my new procedure V1 works great on Win10, and I can go back and forth or backwards and forwards between 5 different backups in 20-30 seconds.

I think real copy as such is dead. They merged a lot of their ideas in to Ax64, so the new product will be it.

Passing on some relevant information here...

For all those foaming at the mouth for a Windows "Native NT API" trouble free restoration (next release, I believe), please be advised (unless the AX64 Devs have performed some sort of minor miracle) of the following limitations associated with using that interface...

No network services available - if your images are on a network-based device (NAS, other LIVE system) they will not be available using this method.

USBn support - If your images are located on a USB-based device not "natively" supported (3rd party drivers involved) by the Windows OS in use, they will not restore. USB3 would be the most relevant example... "native" OS support only exists in Windows 8 and above, not available in Windows 7 or below. I don't know this for a fact but most likely the USB3 device will be treated with USB2 speed limitations. Any special weird 3rd party HDD/SSD additions would also fit into this category.

Other than the above limitations, supported local disks and USB2 devices should work very well as image holders when using this new "mode." Hopefully the old WARM restore will still be available for use with the "native mode" unsupported storage elements.

...and it would be great if the Devs automate this whole process so users don't have to know anything about the above other than the limitations involved.

Good to know, Thanks...I am relieved to know my new method above works, so IF the new version of AX64 doesn't work or is extremely slow, I still have version 1.... And I don't think it can get much more convenient or faster than V1 using my current method. I can choose between 6 backups and be up and running with any of them in 25 seconds.

Just so everyone knows... v1.4.1.48 was never a "released" version, it was a BETA only. They seem to be making it available at BG's referece above.

That is true, but I would dare to say all of V1's were beta but 1.4.1.4.8 was the latest or last version available.

    NO, strictly speaking,

There were official releases that were (and are) available for purchase, these are not considered betas given the above definition. If you are saying that because the program was not perfect on all systems that it should be considered a beta then all programs (well almost all I guess) would have to be considered betas as well. I have been using AX64 V1 since its original release (updating as V1 updates were made available) and I have had very few issues with any of them,,,,none at all with the latest which as Froggie pointed out was actually a beta but has functioned very well for many folks.

I agree with that assessment...Not beta, yet beta because it wasn't a polished product and could have used some more work...

I also use V1 and have version 2 also, but prefer V1

Hello rodneym, sorry to bother you with it, but what are your main reasons to stick with V1? I've tested both (on Windows 10 Pro) and the thing I like with V1 is that there a much less .axd files maintained compared to V2. I've just tested to restore a backup from a network share using V1 and it works very well. Haven't tested this with V2.

No bother. I'll just paste what I wrote before, this is why I like version 1, it is fast, simple and all done while in windows....

So I have forgotten the reason AX has had to change what it does at the start of a restore. Was, is it something to do with W10 or resolves some other problem. Weeks ago I mentioned that v2 restored my x64 W10 desktop but then I immediately uninstalled again it since I'm covered with Macrium. Non the less, I'm thinking about installing v1 (or I might wait until the new version) as a backup backup after reading the answer(s) to this question and I thank you!

The old version failed on occasion (on some systems, but too many) to complete restores, thus the change in the process in order to make the app more reliable.
