Yeah - same here , but my policy is now to ignore any update that isn't labelled " Important " and " security update " ,
and the remainder go in the "sin-bin " for at least 2 weeks.

And on that subject , has anyone already installed the rest of this month's batch for W7 64-bit ?

I installed all of those non-office updates 2 days ago. The only one that gave me grief was KB308195. My system has always been pretty snappy but after that update Chrome was insufferably slow in opening sites and yesterday I got the first BSOD I have had in years. Seemed too much of a coincidence to be ignored, so I uninstalled it and rebooted Chrome is no longer sluggish. KB is now gathering cobwebs.

I installed the five I had (I don't run MS Office) and no problems so far.

That's interesting. I haven't noticed any problems with Chrome x64 yet.

So say I install Windows 7 today, with a DVD that was lastly updated back in 2010 and has SP1. You guys think I should not update it?

It depends on what you are using for security software. I use EAM/Appguard/HMPA/ERP and SBIE. I might well skip. Little while back I build a win 8.1x64 Pro Virtual machine, from an original 8.1 disk. Extremely snappy. Then applied all the win updates, and turned it into a real dog. What are you running for security software

    Hi Quietman,
No not yet installed - mine are all still waiting in the wings. Plus just hidden KB3095649 like everyone else.

I'd be using a non-Administrative account + Avira Free (hardened) + EMET (maximum security) + COMODO Internet Security (HIPS on Safe Mode, Sandboxing most programs, Firewall) + MalwarebytesPRO if they answer my support question, because I'm having problems with a license that I got from a friend, otherwise I would be MBAM Free.

Okay, a couple of thought's. I'd consider HMPA over Emet, as it offers better protection. Also if you run into any issues, their response will be better then MS. Also I'd say fine with Comodo, but use SBIE for sandboxing. It's the best.

Finally. Use a good imaging program, like Macrium Home. Not the cheapest, but it is awesome.

    Pete

PS. Reason I am most comfortable with my setup is that it has held up well against real malware that I test with

It might not be KB3088195. I hid that one and installed all the others, and got a BSOD too, at shutdown. So it wasn't related to the 195 update...

OK, Malwarebytes just contacted me and they did reset my key. Aparently I forgot to de-activate once or twice before formatting my computer.

I couldn't find what HMPA is. Could you point me to directions?

But is it a paid product? I have -5000 BRL right now :argh:

    Sandboxie?

A bit late to reply, but I doubt I am going to be infected. I don't use IE, most of the Windows services and other softwares are protected by either EMET or HMP.Alert. No Java, flash is enabled per-site basis as needed and set to update by alternative flash player auto-updater. Most of my installed softwares FOSS. Then comes the security softwares in my signature. Unless I am targeted by some critical Windows bugs, I am going to be fine.

Right now as I see, if I am going to do update (have four months to catch on), I will need to invest quite sometime. First, check a few threads and google for some updates, download, restart and again check to confirm that I have hidden the nasties. That's just too much work and even then I might break the OS.

So, I installed Windows 7 Home Basic x64 and decided to fully update it.

It took me 6 hours just to find the +200 updates, then 10 minutes to download them, then 4 hours to install all updates (except the ones at that "Windows 7 telemetry updates to avoid" thread).

I don't see any breakage in the software I use, and the system feels as fast as it was on first boot. It's obviously a bit slower because of Avira+Comodo+MBAM, but benchmarks are pretty much showing the same results as when Windows was freshly installed.

You did pretty much what I did a few weeks ago, except I'm Win 7 Home Premium. I restored that image now, and am about to do October updates, but I'm removing Avira first and replacing it with Avast. After doing October updates last time, with Avira, I got a BSOD. Not sure if it was just chance or Avira bugs, but something in the October updates didn't agree with Avira on my machine... I'll see how it goes with Avast today...

Yeah, computing isn't an exact science :p

I admit, I love avast. It gives me a pretty good control over it and there are lots of other things I love about it. However, for some reason, it slows my machine down if I set it to scan every file that is being downloaded. This didn't happen in the past versions, and my download speed didn't change since 2012; not to mention 1 MB/s isn't that much to scan anyway.

I was under the impression that Avast slows my machine down a little too, as compared to Avira, which is pretty light. But I just found Avira too buggy. So I'll try going with Avast for now and see what happens... :)

@Kerodo The 2016 beta of Avast has been exceptionally light for me, and doesn't slow down my laptop.

I used to run the beta's of Avast many years ago, probably back in 2004 or 05. This time though, the current Avast seems ok. It could have just been something else last time that gave me that impression. So far so good.. ;)

I had a BSOD also after updating with October's updates. First time in ages. It crashed at shutdown, and apparently it was Avira. But I'm blaming the updates since everything was working peachy before I installed them. This is on Win 7 btw....

    Hi,
...anyone have an idea why I received Microsoft security advisory: Update to default cipher suite priority order: May 12, 2015 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3042058 with October Updates.
Edit: re-read...release in May was for testing.
    Thanks
