I always have my Windows Update set to prompt me for updates before downloading the updates and to prompt me before installing updates. Today, I deselected the all optional updates (only updates marked 'Security' were left selected. However, I did not see an option to install the selected updates. I just clicked OK and Microsoft started downloading Windows 10. I tried to do a normal shut down, but Microsoft was still trying to download and install the Windows 10 Update during the shutdown process. I immediately powered-off the computer and restarted. I made another attempt with Windows Update with the same results.

I then restored an image from about 3 days ago. I looked again and saw no option to install only the selected updates, so I immediately completely turned off Windows Update.

Is anyone else having this issue, or am I missing something?

    Thanks in Advance.

I had my settings as you had yours "Prompt Me" just until a few days ago I turned off Windows Update. I'm sure glad I did.
Give MS some time and they will probably figure out a way to go around this script or send out some borked update that will screw up Win 7 and 8 to get you to download Win 10. At this point I believe MS will do anything to get everyone to switch to Win 10. This game is getting old.

The Windows 10 optional update is always pre-ticked now.

You untick it, close updates box and reopen it again..Win 10 is pre-ticked.

It can say 7 security updates and so you click to install but because the Win 10 is pre-ticked it tries to install as well.

    Sneaky :ninja:

I can see a lot of folk having the same issue as TheKid7 this week, but most won't have had the foresight to have made an image.

I am trying to decide what is the best way to proceed. I uninstalled only one KB (I think that it was KB3035583, but I am not at my computer now.) and the Windows 10 Tray Icon disappeared. I have monthly Full System Partition Images for a period of about 2 years.

I could Restore an Image from at least 6 months ago and only select Critical Windows Updates. If I did this, would Microsoft somehow try to 'sneak' in Windows 10 anyway? Could I still install ONLY Critical Updates?

I could uninstall ALL of the 'known to be related to Windows 10' KB's, but I don't know if that would fully get rid of Windows 10 stuff.

If you have Win 7 pro or above, you can edit Group Policy to prevent your system updating to Win 10.
See post 1158 in 'Bork Tuesday'.
I did this and it seems to work.
I'm afraid if you only have a Win home system then it becomes a problem.

I am considering the possibly purchasing a couple of Windows 7 Pro 64 bit Licenses, wiping the hard drives (2 PC's) and installing Windows 7 Pro.

I tried turning off OS Update in the Registry of my other Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit PC. I rebooted and it took several minutes to get to the Desktop. Windows 10 was missing from the Windows Updates when I ran check for Windows Updates. I downloaded and installed only the Security Updates. After the Windows Update reboot I started to browse the web and Sandboxie started hammering me with errors. I finally managed to terminate the sandbox. A short time later I got a BSOD.

I restored an Image from about a week ago and everything was OK again, except for the same Windows 10 issue. I immediately turned off Windows Update.

Exactly what I thought (and called ss "cheeky") when I saw it reappear...and now deemed "Important", not "Recommended" or "Optional", as it previously was. So next month it will probably reappear as "Critical"?

@Dermot7. KB3083710 Update for Windows 7 , according to one poster has been changed to critical already in the MS catalog. I installed it when it was first offered, but I understand that since we do not know what the entire payload is, it should be considered suspect. Most GWX watchers have it on their list as a recommended hide, but that is because it has some W10 references that no-one has yet deciphered. I have a script installed to stop W10 and its army of KB soldiers and KB3083710 is not on that list. Some lists have more than others. To be clear, I am totally bamboozled by this Optional to Important to Critical strategy that MS has adopted - it is no less than dishonest.

NB: This patch Tuesday there was a change to KB308710 (note: I did not get KB3083710 this Tuesday and I do not know why). The registry entry remained unchanged (I checked it today) ...

"It may be that Microsoft wasn't intentionally/explicitly wiping out settings related to the Win 10 download, and really they were just wiping ALL Windows Update settings as part of this patch. It's possible that KB 3083710 (for Windows 7) or KB 3083711 (for Windows 8.1) wiped out that registry setting. At least on some PCs, KB 3083710 and KB 3083711 were changed on Tuesday, with their status going from optional-and-unchecked to important-and-checked. That may account for the registry change on Wednesday (Windows Update changes to the registry only "take" upon restart)". Source: Infoworld.

I am thinking about restoring a System Partition Image from several months ago, turning off Windows OS Updates in the Registry, installing only Critical Patches and making sure that I do not install KB3088195.

Can someone suggest/recommend how far back I should go? I have Full Monthly System Partition Images for about the last 12 months.

    Thanks in Advance.

I don't know, but if I wanted to make sure I avoided all the 10 related nagware, I'd probably use an image from at least as far back as April 2015... maybe even earlier.

So if I keep updating a Windows 7 Home Basic, it will turn into Windows 10?

Somehow I still don't see the upgrade icon after Microsoft's "wonderful" borkdate... Seems to be due to the disabled service and scheduled tasks. Reapplying just in case.

Probably it will if, you'll install all updates and run Windows upgrade when asked to do so.

But this Upgrade will appear as a big window on the desktop, right? It's not a sneaky update that comes from Windows update.

What I would be worried is that if I keep installing all updates that come from Windows Update, the Windows 7 will turn into Windows 10 without my precise consent.

Well, today is the first time I opened the Windows Update control panel since September and I was greeted by this crap:

    Win10crap.jpg

Here's the updates listing shown when opening that Show all available updates link:

    001684.jpg

I'm actually reluctant to do an update.

A while back I ran Ultimate Outsider's GWX Stopper 1.0. The latest v1.3, renamed GWX Control Panel, shows:

    001686.jpg

I also disabled the GWX tasks in Task Scheduler and blocked gwxconfigmanager.exe and gwxdetector.exe in the firewall.

But I'm still paranoid about running the current Windows Update.

•Is the advice to uncheck KB3083710?

(FYI: My Windows Update, Home Premium, has always been set to check & choose before download/install.)

As far as I'm aware KB3083710 adds an option in Group Policy to disable Upgrades to the OS. But as you have Win Home you won't have Group Policy.
There seems to be a third party offering that can enable Group Policy for Home Premium, but you have to decide yourself whether you would want to try it.

    http://www.askvg.com/how-to-enable-...home-premium-home-basic-and-starter-editions/

I checked Group Policy before and after installing this update and it does add that option which I have now enabled (that is to disable future updates to the OS).
