Well I can hardly be responsible for you reading so much into me merely stating my personal approach to pagefiles.

I haven't given my opinion one way or another on what I think other users should do, and for that reason have no requirement to justify an invisible argument I never actually made. You've falsely attributed something to me that only exists in your mind, which is unfair and unnecessary.

A responsible user will: research changes before they make them, have ways of dealing with potential pitfalls, and back up their work.

Some of my reasoning and opinions match quite well with that 2008 article written by Mark Russinovich, while others are based on Microsoft documentation on what the pagefile is strictly for. Lastly, the allowance for older applications that are hardcoded to use a pagefile is based on something I read quite some time ago.

Here Mark Russinovich discusses the "misleading recommendations" by Microsoft regarding setting the size of a page file, and how even your venerable PhDs at Microsoft can implement faulty advice taken from guides:

Again, that blog from Mark is from 2008, long before Windows 7, Windows 8.x or Windows 10. And no where in there does he recommend users change their PF. What he does do is say if you are going to, do it right.

Again, I don't care what you do, I care what the readers are told. And if they are being told they don't need a PF, or to set a manual one without being told how or that they need to frequently re-evaluate their virtual memory needs, then they are being given bad advice! So again, I will stick to those 4 points I made in my last post because you have not shown us doing anything different is better.

And again, since there are several here in this discussion, when I say "you", I mean the plural.

Now again, this is not our thread, and PFs are not the topic. So I will refrain from participating in this OT discussion further.

You have to compare a properly configured/optimized pagefile to a fragmented Windows managed pagefile (just use it for a few weeks and you'll have that). How much of a gain is determined by hardware, other configuration factors (like partitions), and usage. There's also the difference between a technical performance gain (is guaranteed, can be measured/observed through benchmarking/telemetry) and a perceptible performance gain (is contingent, all depends on whether the user notices and cares).

Frankly, Bill, you may be a big fish in another bowl but you aren't here and conversation isn't subject to your approval; if the OP or mods have an issue, they will say so. If I may be so bold, I would add that your "company line" non-technical advice is why the real experts don't use Microsoft forums. As for chest-thumping, while you were playing with radios in the Air Force, I was managing minicomputers and replacing typewriters with microcomputers (PCs) and connecting them to ARPANET for the Air Force (I'm a retired E7 too, BTW) after working on mainframes, hard disks at the hardware level, memory when it was made of ferrite donuts, and even solid-state disks the size of a "radar range" (that would be a microwave oven). By night, I have been a video/computer gamer (since Pong) and a gamer has a greater need for performance than anyone else on the planet because games have always exceeded the limits of hardware. After 4 decades of spending most of my waking hours on this stuff, I am an expert. However, that doesn't matter though because that doesn't make me (or anyone else) infallible or all-knowing or right all the time. Heck, I'm in a certificate program right now to learn more IT stuff. (On that note, it's free to some vets, you may be interested: http://vets.syr.edu/education/employment-programs/ )

I encourage anyone interested in tuning one's PC for performance, to test my advice (and anyone else's for that matter) by learning how storage works, how NTFS works, and how paging/memory swapping works (use Google--I'll advise and assist but not hand-hold or explain what's already been explained).

Yep. I've tried many different combinations, and observed zero effect on performance no matter where what the pagefile is set. I've looked at independent benchmarks on the effect of various pagefile sizes on performance, which also matched my experience. I've run PCs without pagefiles trying to see if anything would break in normal use.

As stated, I'm perfectly willing to listen to a technical justification for how my settings might have an adverse outcome - that way I'd have something more to test. As it stands, I'm very happy with the performance of my machines.

lol Still you totally ignore my major concerns - and that is, the failure to tell users how to properly configure the PF and not one of you have addressed the fact you MUST regularly go back and re-analyze it. And now you imply if you set the page file limits manually (fixed size or min to max, who knows?) that it will not become fragmented. But if Windows sets the limits, it will. :(

You guys are deviating from the defaults. Except in the case of very limited free disk space, you have failed to show that there is any advantage. In fact, RJK3 reports no advantage either way which shows there is no reason to change from the defaults.

I have provided many links showing it is best to just let Windows manage it. Again, none of you have shown any that says it is best to set it manually. So you can keep saying this is not my fish bowl (noting you are not a mod either), that does not mean my advice is not sound. I did not become a big fish else by dolling out bad advice, nor have I been recognized for 9 years running for dolling out bad advice either.

If you advise others to manually set their PF, or you infer or imply to others it is fine to set theirs manually, unless you also tell them how to properly analyze their commit charges and peak usage AND that they must regularly go back and reanalyze their needs, I can categorically say that advice is not sound! :(

Then I thank you for your service. And if you follow the link in my sig, you will see I have some experience going way back too. But this is 2015. What was, is not now.

Now you may be waiting for a mod to say let's get back on topic, but I am not. Have a good weekend.

Nothing to Wait On. This Thread Has Gone Way Off Topic, With Tons of Member Bashing, That There's No Sense in Keeping It Open, Since OP Already Decided. Thread Closed!
