novirusthanks exe radar pro, spyshelter, voodoshield, appguard, hitmanpro.alert, malwarebtyes anti-exploit free. which one would be the best choice (free if possible, lighter and more comprehensive) to complement wsa on a win 10 system? thanks
I am sure users of those programs will come here and suggest them... but I would simply stick with WSA + a backup software (unless you run WSA complete which has already a backup system).
You'll most certainly get a slew of suggestions. I would start to try them out yourself and see what you like. I personally use Voodooshield with WSA. I've also used appguard and NVT. Both are good and both will give you great additional protection.
How about Quietzone, plus Antimalwarebytes, Malwarebytes antiexploit, AdGuard and Nortons latest security suite on Windows 10. Good combo if you download torrents movies. With Quietzone you download THE torrent while in Quietzone, Watch it and reboot and all is gone., or save it to a USB stick and reboot. Trying to be too safe without good protection is very boring. If ones life centers around Wilders for many years like mine did and doesn't experience the fun things in life that might be risky, that is a sad life.
Webroot does not protect Windows Firewall nor UAC (malwares can disable either or both with WSA installed), so for optimum protection you should add an anti-executable. NVT ERP or VooDooShield complement WSA very nicely. NVT ERP is freeware. Get is here at Wilders on the NVT ERP subforum.
https://detail.webrootanywhere.com/agenthelp.asp?n=Managing_the_Firewall Actually, Webroot Firewall is outbound-only and complements Windows Firewall inbound. As for disabling UAC, that is seriously outdated security advice and does not make much difference in convenience these days (FYI Task Scheduler) and negatively affects security and system stability (unless running everything as admin somehow doesn't do that). Well it does revert to automatically elevate admin and keeps segregation in Windows 8+, but it's still unnecessary at best disabling it. As for NRT, that's not exactly necessary with how extremely rare automated exploits are these days and you have to run everything (including malware) manually. They are good for controlling existing programs and services though.
Webroot products cannot\do not protect Windows Firewall and Windows UAC; there are malwares that will bypass Webroot and disable Windows Firewall and UAC. Windows UAC should not be disabled by the user. Webroot by itself is not sufficient to protect system. NVT ERP or VS will bolster system protection.
Can you provide evidence of this? i.e. Malware actually disabling windows firewall, UAC and WSA without any reaction by WSA? I found this claim rather unfunded.
All you have to do is register at Virussign and then test their malware packs or do the same with samples from Malwaretips Malware Hub. Eventually you will find samples that will disable Windows Firewall and\or UAC. For example, many Zbot variants can disable Windows Firewall and UAC... this is nothing new and has been around for a long time. Undetected Zbot messes with all AVs I tested it against. Also, there are malicious scripts that can bypass UAC and most AVs. The samples I found that disabled WIndows Firewall and WIndows UAC with WSA installed, I submitted to Webroot. I was told by Webroot that they will make sure WSA detects it. My reply was, so what happens when such a sample is not detected by Webroot ? I got no reply from Webroot. I stand by my statements. They are factual and true.
You can stand by your statement but cannot conclude based on one malware that WSA does not protect by default OS settings (firewall, UAC, etc). This is not actually the case, as far as is my experience. I would warmly pledge for a minimum of verification before coming to these conclusions. There are novice users here that cannot really do a critical reading of users statements (good or bad)
