The recent Optional updates are now offered as Recommended updates. See my Monday September 7 post.
If you hid those updates when they were offered as Optional, probably they won't be relisted as Recommended later on? Was this different in the recent past, with earlier Optional/Recommended updates?

 

All my updates on Win 7 and Win 8.1 came as 'Important' today, including KB3083324 (Win 7), KB3083325 (Win 8.1) and KB3092627 (both).

 

If in Windows Update "Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates" is enabled (which is default), then Recommended updates are offered as Important. So the updates that were first offered as Optional but are now Recommended (see my September 7 post), will be offered as Important.

 

Thanks for that Stupendous Man , anything that can pre-filter these nuisance updates is a definite bonus.
Personally , I won't even consider installing updates unless they labelled as "Important " .... and that's only after a minimum of 2 weeks in "quarantine "

 

Thanks ... never really knew about that setting. I think there is increasingly an issue whether one should trust MS recommendations, maybe that option should be unticked.

 

Perhaps just a checkbox stating: Do You Trust Microsoft At All To Do Anything?

Hi and thanks. I just disabled this setting and my 12 important updates before unticking are now changed to 11 Important and 1 optional - so it definitely works.

I Haven't got back any of the 3 optionals that were pulled by MS earlier in the week though. - KB3083324 | KB3075249 | KB3080149

 

Yesterday i think i had 11 total updates but today i have 12 updates but don't know which update might be the new one.

I've never actually used WMP as it needs too many additional codecs or something. VLC, SMplayer and MPC-HC are all far superior anyway.

'So the next time somebody sends you an article that says "The Windows 10 spying stuff is going to Windows 7 and 8.1," you can counter with a few facts, instead of a lot of hand wringing. There are two old-timer lessons to take away from all this, which I've repeated indefatigably since the arrival of XP:

Don't click to install optional updates
Turn off CEIP
Turning off CEIP in Windows XP, Vista, 7, and 8.1 is not easy.

In XP and Vista, click Start > Control Panel > System and Maintenance > Problem Reports and Solutions. On the left at the bottom click Customer Experience Improvement Program Settings. In the resulting dialog box, check "I don't want to join the program at this time" and click OK.

In Win7, type "Experience" in the Start menu search bar; in Windows 8.1, type "Experience" on the Metro Start screen. In either case, click on Change Customer Experience Improvement Program Settings. In the resulting dialog box, check "No, I don't want to participate in the program," then click Save Changes.

Turn off CEIP in Office 2010 (desktop) and later by starting an Office program, then click on File > Options > Trust Center, then click the button marked Trust Center Settings, Privacy Options and uncheck the box marked "Sign up for the Customer Experience Improvement Program" or (depending on version) "Send us information about your use and performance of Office software to help improve your Microsoft experience."

If you're using Microsoft Security Essentials, bring up MSE (icon in the system tray), click Help > Customer Experience Improvement Program, and then check "I don't want to join the Customer Experience Improvement Program."

If you're using Windows Media Player, switch to VLC Media Player, fer heaven's sake -- it doesn't collect any information. If you have to stick with WMP, start it up and click Tools > Options > Privacy tab and then uncheck the box marked "I want to help make Microsoft software and services even better by sending Player usage data to Microsoft."' ~ op cit

I think MS has made some changes to the Windows Update Client somehow in the past month but I did not install KB3083325 (it is supposed to update WU Client) -it disappeared before I got to it. I noticed in this thread that others had received the September updates but as the notification icon had not appeared in the task bar, I assumed that the servers in my region had not been scheduled to distribute them. Nothing this morning but at 2:30pm there were 13 updates, however the notification icon is not showing. Another mystery disappearance.

 

No problems so far with Windows 10 updates on host system and Windows 7 updates guest virtual machine. Yes, I checked all those optional updates.

 

Re Windows 10 update:

 

I've had at least two Optional updates which I've hidden that were later reclassified to either Recommended or Important and re-offered, but to be honest I can't remember which classification.

• KB2952664 - I can't tell you how many times this one kept coming back.

I have that setting checked.

 

Installed the Win 10 updates today, no problems, no issues... Things have been running real smooth.

Interesting. After reading this article (thanks, @Dragon1952 for the link ) I checked my Win7 machine and found I had missed KB3068708, after all, I'd not long ago restored it back to Win7 factory condition after upgrading to Win10 and there were hundreds of Windows updates which I wasn't going to check each and every update. Anyway, when I uninstalled KB3068708 and restarted I ran Windows Update and as expected, KB3068708 was offered again, so I hid it. The interesting part is that KB2882822 was also offered. This update was released in 2013, so why I am offered it now?
