Yeah I did put them on the exclude lists in Avira. But the main reason I want to switch from Avira is because the system tray icon no longer appears and the Control Center doesn't launch anymore.

I suggest a complete uninstall and reinstall with latest version, there are lots of improvements also with control center.

uninstall from config screen, add/remove programs and uninstall all avira products
After uninstall run avira registry cleaner https://www.avira.com/en/download/product/avira-registry-cleaner

full offline installer at the bottom of page : 195 MB

if you want avira browser safety https://www.avira.com/en/avira-browser-safety

Not at the moment. If you try to download Bitdefender Antivirus Free with Windows 10 you get a notice saying "It is not yet compatible". The "not yet" hopefully means it will eventually be. :)

I contacted Bitdefender via Twitter as regards future plans for their Bitdefender Antivirus free edition product.
I asked them if they had any future plans to make Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition compatible with Windows 10, here is their reply.

That's too bad but on the other hand there is no way I would put Windows 10 on my computers for obvious reasons I will not go into here. I figure Windows 8.1 and 7 will be the last OS's I connect to the internet. After their support ends I will only go online with a linux distro. Right now I have one XP computer that dual boots with Ubuntu and I manage fine with all the software available in the Software Center.

I suspect they have regrets from offering the free program. By not updating it to Win 10, it allows them to essentially discontinue it over time, without coming out and saying it.

I have some users running Bitdefender Free on Windows 7 who are having issues where the Bitdefender Free icon does not always show up in the system tray, seems to be rather random.

Is this a recent issue with Bitdefender Free or a more common issue dating further back? Anyone else experiencing this?

I hope so. As long as they continue to push BDCore and AVC support components and files (Plugins sigs, AVC exc & sig, etc.), and considering Gonzales (cloud AV), B-HAVE, rootkit and IDS really don't really need further 7 and 8.1 development, BD Free will continue to be a viable, and IMHO superior, free solution. Critical signature subsets update religiously 4-10 times a day, and AVC files on a regular basis.

The avcuf32 and avcuf64 dlls were updated on 11/6 - those are the ones injected into running processes. bdcore.dll has been 11.0.1.12 forever and it's doubtful it could get better than it already is. With AVC being their leading-edge product, I believe they still bundle BDcore to handle the "simple" crud and if anything else passes it, AVC kicks in. Browser filtering is done in the cloud (global Nimbus servers) for Internet facing apps - no browser extensions needed.

For me, Gonzales and Nimbus cloud activity is primarily to N. American servers, with an occasional visit to Romania.

When exactly does that "does not always show up" occur? The only problem I've experienced in the ~2½ years I've been running it is that I have to sometimes click the tray icon twice to evoke the GUI.

I also wonder if BD going to update their free edition for Windows 10 (still not compatible) all major vendors offering a free version Avira, Panda, and coming soon Kaspersky free, Mcafee free ........

First out of the gate isn't always the race winner.

Until real-world and trusted tests show that any of those free products are better than 10's Defender/NIS/UAC/SmartScreen/Windows Firewall combo (I'm thinking not), the wondering is more or less moot.

With 10 scratching 7% at this point and a 1 billion installed base in two to three years probably a pie-in-the-sky goal, I believe BD is wisely focusing on their premium products.

Maybe we'll see a BD Free version by the time Windows 10 Threshcrud 5 rolls out. :D

They never fixed reported bugs so I guess there won't be an update for Windows 10.

The fact that Bitdefender Free is not Win10 compatible makes it even more perfect for my taste.

    I doubt if that's crossed anyone's mind. ;)

The member who replied to the OP in the BD forum is correct in that the version displayed in the UI is for the Gonzales service (gzserv.exe) which was replaced by the Security Service (vsserv.exe) in BD 2015 (or 2014, I forget) premium products and continue on in the 2016 products. Those do all the Nimbus, etc. cloud things.

The "Bitdefender engine" has been at the current v11.0.1.12 forever in all BD products and AVC (essentially a stand-alone layer) will work in Free just as well as it does in 2016 for Windows 10.

The previous 1.0.21.1099 arrived almost two years ago and updated the original 1.0.13.840 if I recall correctly; there might have been a couple or three in between.

Considering gzserv worked perfectly good for that length of time for Windows previous to 10 one can only speculate, hopefully optimistic, as to this update.

Fo what is worth, I was using BD Free for at least 6 months since the Windows 10 release on 2 of my computers and never had a single problem.
