I believe KB3035583 was the original GWX, yet these could have been separate strings of the same banjo. :shifty:

Today KB3083324 disappeared from optional updates - I chose to wait and poof, it was gone. Now MS is playing hide and seek with updates. This is getting weird.

    ... getting weird ??

We went way beyond weird some time ago.

I've been sort of expecting this scenario for a while :-

What are M$ planning to to do about those people who have clearly and definitely turned their backs on W10 ?
..... and let's not pretend for one second that they don't know "who" we are ( i.e. in terms of hardware fingerprint , Update history ,browser prefs etc, etc. )

I'm picturing a whole new mudslide of updates that are essentially nagware , but this time will probably be classed as " important " .
Are we really going to see W10 nagware and telemetry sneaked in with so-called "security updates " ?

So far , that line hasn't been crossed ..... ...

I hope it will stay that way. Not fun sifting through updates each time they come out:sick:

I'll bet MS tries to sneak them in this Patch Tuesday coming up.:mad:
    Yeah, I agree.

Windows 10 is free for a year. After a year is up and it is no longer free, I'm wondering are we still going to get these bork updates for Win 10 even though we decided to stick with Win 7 or 8?

    That's a very interesting point.

That is not new. That has been so for several months now, or even since the beginning of this year. (Or perhaps even longer?)
In the weeks before Patch Tuesday several Optional updates are offered, and most of them are pulled a few days before Patch Tuesday.
On Patch Tuesday those updates are offered once again, but now as Recommended updates, or perhaps some even as Important updates, I'm not sure of that, I haven't checked.
To me it seems that most of the Optional updates are meant for testing on willing guinea pigs, for a few weeks, after which the updates are then offered as Recommended, or perhaps some even as Important.

I tend to agree with this. To be honest, I think this can equally apply to entire Microsoft operating systems. I'd wait at least a year before buying a new MS OS. It takes them at least that long to iron out the bugs and for third party software distributors to make their programs compatible. That's not even including hardware compatibilities.

Thanks. That is very interesting and not something I'd thought of before. What it does do is validate our reasons for not installing optional updates in the first place.

    Beta testers.are willing guinea pigs.

Yep. And Microsoft's practice of offering updates as Optional first before offering them as Recommended (or even Important?) updates later, seems to be a sneaky way to trick users into beta testing without their knowledge.

KB 3083324 has been removed from my list of updates also.

Since I last checked a few days ago, six non-recommended optional updates disappeared from my WU, including KB 3083324. (Thankfully, M$ has not aggressively pushed the W10 upgrade junk to my old laptop, which can barely run Windows 7: all the GWX-related updates were marked as optional and non-recommended.)

As of today's (Sept.) Patch Tuesday, all the telemetry updates for Windows 7 have reappeared and are marked as "recommended" for me. Non-security updates KB 3077715 (time zone update) and the infamous 3083324 are back and now listed as "Important." I am not installing any of these unless a legitimate reason emerges.

Hmm, I've only been offered 11 Security patches for my Win7 machine.

11 updates offered and installed the 9 critical updates only and did hide 3083324 since I don't trust that one. No other telemetry updates here.

Installed my 11 security patches, which one of them was Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, restarted and ran Windows Update again and got 1 Important Update, the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool again = 45.2MB.

Last time something like this happened I think there was a new version of MRT.EXE released.

Well, I just installed that and there is another one of the same. What the hell, MS?

@Krusty13 sometimes WU needs both flavors to install or recognize installed updates.
Both flavors being one or more of a Restart & one or more of a Shutdown.

After doing a Disk Clean-up > Clean up System Files I restarted, then shut down and that did resolve it, thanks @zapjb .

I wonder why I'm not offered the recommended updates. I did hide the recent Optional updates when they were offered.
